Tank Painting Issues

Anyone help?


Probably easy, but I am not used to spray-painting ally.

Thoroughly cleaned tank with thinners, allowed to dry overnight, then sprayed so-called ally etching primer, allowed to dry, then a coat of stone-chip paint. Then after a week underseal,
Came up well. That was a few months ago.

Went to trial fit...and found some of the coating crinkled and cracked & lifting...bum!

What have I done wrong? The etch primer seems not to have touched the ally at all!

Ideas?

Looks like I will have to find some way of removing the lot and starting again?

Did you rub the ali down to form a key?
Etch primer should have worked without but a key does help.

Could the underseal have reacted with the stone-chip paint ?

Actually no Stev, I didn't! Perhaps I should have...although the etch-primer was very expensive!
I can pull off the coating with my finger-nail.

I did try just etch-primer and then hammerite on the other....trying different finishes, and although no signs of cracking/shrinking, i have noticed a couple of small areas where the paint has chipped off, but nothing as bad as the other.

Recon I have a duff batch of etch-primer then!

Anyone else ever experienced this?

There is the remote possibility that the etch primer had chemical incompatibility issues with the residue of the solvent you used to degrease.

Best bet with this stuff is to get aircraft quality paint and like Steve suggested, use one complete system rather than mixing. Alternatively take it to someone who paints panels for cladding systems and get them to do it. You'll need to make sure their curing temps are not high enough to damage the foam in the tanks.

I've just brush painted mine with smooth black hammerite. It doesn't look like it will come off. Can't really see it being a problem if it does to be honest. It would take many years for the ali to corrode even if not protected... Just my opinion.. Has anyone experienced any corrosion problems around the tanks? If so I too will be etch priming tomorrow!! :-)
