Centering the clutch is absolutely essential.
Buy a tool or if tight like me make your own.
In the UK domestic water pipe (copper) is 15mm and just the right size to go in the spigot bearing in the flywheel. You then wrap masking tape round and round higher up the tube until it is a tight fit in the spline of the clutch centre plate. Make sure you use a fairly long pipe then you can see that it is square to the flywheel whilst bolting up the clutch.

There's a guide tube on the trans and there's two sizes available, 38mmOD and 32mmOD, you need the 32mmOD one. Mine was shipped from PHii with the incorrect one, I nearly pulled my hair out trying to fit the trans, thinking it was an alignment problem... then I measured this and found the problem.

i thought that was the internal diameter of the spigot bearings that go in the end of the crank. Edited by crafty on Thursday 25th October 07:37
obviously if you have a large shaft and your putting it in a samller ....whats the word...then its going to cause hair loss.

I originally thought it was this too, but its not this problem.As for the other problem you described, if the "thrust bearing" is properly maintained there should not be hair there anyway.

Thanks Guys. So putting a rod in the pilot bearing hole and using that to move the clutch plate around won't hurt the pilot bearing. Is that what I'm hearing you suggest? How do you know when you've got it perfectly centered?

Your words imply waggling the rod around to centre it but that will damage the bearing.Paul
First the rod needs to be a nice fit in the bearing.
When wrapped in tape it will be a tight fit in the clutch centre and will therefore be in the centre of the spline and square to the face of the clutch. It should protrude enough to engage in the bearing when the plate is offered up to the flywheel.
Nothing has yet caused the rod to be out of square but this sometimes happens as you start to tighten the pressure plate particularly if you don't tighten a little at a time all around the plate.
When tight turn the engine over by hand and make sure the rod runs true.
