Jeremy, it can easily be done and if you get the right parts, very little modifying may be required. First question is about what state of tune you engine is in, can it take a supercharger without problems, what is the C/R? What do you want to achieve with a blower in terms of performance? A 142 weiand blower with the shortest nose cone will fit easily, whereas a 177 appears to need some mods [see Stig's site], bigger than that is a 6-71 which is what I'm doing at the moment, and is a real pain to fit in, plus there are lots of engine alterations to be done if not starting the build with the blower. Don't be put off doing it, but be realistic in what you can do and the results.

Cutting the bulkhead is pretty straighforward - certainly not a 'horror' story
You need to do so for a Weiand 177 blower which encroaches by about an inch (with a little more for clearance).Take a look at Crafty's site. Engine prepared by (Jeff) Schwartz Extreme Performance. Supercharger has reversed intake.

Hello, the engine is a 383 cubic inch Chevy with a compression ratio of 9.8:1 so I would think that I can run 6 psi and get away with it. Its supposedly running 450 bhp at present. Its got ally edelbrock heads and runs a 750 cfm holley.You should be ok at the C/R you have but to get the most out of a blower you would also need a suitable cam or you could lose a lot of power at the top end. What the cam spec is, I don't know. However when I spoke to the weiand tech it appear that the shortest nose section for the 142 can also be used on the 177 which would cut down bodywork mods but might need some pulleys turned a bit shorter. Recently, someone got a very good price from AS for an upgrade to a 177, but maybe that was because it was an AS motor.

My engine was built by American speed, and I agree that the cam may need to be changed. One of the guys at work seemed to think it might be worth keeping the cam I have and trying it first, rather than changing it to a milder spec. I passed all my engine details to him and he seemed to think it would be ok... But I would like American speeds opinion first before I went ahead.

If you decide to buy the parts yourself, then don't buy from ebay as you rarely get all the instructions and adapter bits and bobs that come from the manufacturer via Summit Racing et al. If I was going to add another blower I would pick the 177 as the 142 I used was perhaps a bit of a safe choice, but it did give a very pleasing hike to the low and mid range performance, and most of the parts are interchangeable.

You should use the 144 supercharger with short snout. It will be very close to bulkhead of car. WE can supply this supercharger and parts. Carburetor would need to be changed a bit. There would be some machine work to supercharger pulleys to fit alignment of belts.
The big concern with installing a supercharger on your engine is compression. The 450 hp has 9.6 comp. which is too much for a supercharged engine on unleaded pump fuel. You would need 8.0 to 8.2 comp with pump fuel or you will have to run higher octane fuel (100+). You want to avoid detonation at any cost.

I know people are running high comp low boost engines in cars.. upwards of 10:1...surely 6 psi and decent fuel (remember we have 95 octane opposed to 91 in the US) wont hurt.
Guess its a suck it and see...

I ran a 9.5:1 with 6-8psi boost with never a problem, maybe just lucky but maybe also the experts worry too much. Easy to say until something goes bang. Not quite sure if the difference between a 142 and a 144 but would assume it's a bit bigger. Another issue to be aware of includes the thermostat housing, as it needs to be a low profile item [poss supplied by AS]. I also added two lambda sensors with an AFR meter to keep an eye on the how well the set-up was running, worth every penny I thought.
interesting reading, I have been speaking to BAE today regarding a supercharger on my 383, I think I may be going for a 177 blower and My question was also regarding clearance, I think I have found the answer!!! Ultima have told me I need to move the engine back AND cut out the bulk head!!!! BAE hjave said I need to speak to the Vet

that was me then!!decide to go BAE if anywhere.
I'm running 7psi via a pair of turbos into a std (as in cast pistons!) 9.25:1 350 chevy with ally heads. I have switchable ignition maps, so can retard when not running vpower etc.
I assume you are running carbs - and intend to stick to them, as you cant run port injection with those blowers - they need the fuel for cooling/lube.

these units give you more boost the faster you spin them. so yyou make peak PSI at the red line. they have been proven to work great on carb setups to.

If you can get the blower kit to have one of the shortest nose cones, with part number either 6086, 6085 or 6066, you should find that the front bulkhead doesn't need any mods just the depth of the lower pulley by lathe. Then the only clearance issue I had was with the thermostat housing. I believe weiand do an off the shelf item but would need to speak to their tech dept to check. All their spec lists are on the holley site under weiand. Don't need to touch the engine mounts with the short nose cone.
