I bought the car home last night, broke down on the way and lost its spark, tried it this morning and it fired up,I warmed it up turned it off and now it will not start again.

I have swapped the coil for a new one, I am running an american speed 383ci???? with msd ignition with no crank trigger,I have permanent live and switch live at the msd box, should I have 12v at the + on the coil with ignition on???or just when cranking??

one pissed off new ultima owner,

Andrew.

Don't wish to piss you off further but you will have to get used to working on the thing or get rid of it I am affraid, these cars seem to be a labour of love for most of us.

MSD problems again?

Try following the simple test on the MSD website,

www.msdignition.com/pdf/tech bulletins/tb_top_10.pdf and
www.msdignition.com/1troub1.htm

Thats if you are certain that there is no external system that is acting as an anti-theft device.

My MSD started to play up and just seemed to cut sparks so I used that as the signal for EFI... Best decision I ever made (concerning the Canam!)

Hi dilley, sorry mate don't seem to be having alot of luck at the moment, there seem to have been a few msd died recently , is it mounted on the front bulkhead ? sounds like its temp related issue, can you get it apart might be worth taking it to someone who can check the pcb's ,check all the earth leads to make sure they are tight also.

Hi Andrew, it's quicker to go to Real Steal, near Uxbridge (Tel No: 01895 440505) They keep most things in stock.

Looks like you are in for a steep learning curve. I wish I could help, but auto electrics are black magic to me

Hope you make it to Stoneleigh though!

I have just had a similar problem, but managed to limp home firing on 2 cylinders (might have been 3 ) when I switched off it didnt start again. I had no live feed or signal. To date I havent really sussed out what was wrong, but I found the pickup in the dizzy wasnt giving a signal either. I just ended up junking the dizzy and 6AL and buying new. The previous owner was firing the 6AL from the mag pickup but used the white wire, rather than the 2 wires that are dedicated to mag pickups...this could have fried it I guess, that with the heat...

Dizzy on the Can-Am failed.at Rockingham Check the earth straps especially the dizzy and battery. A poor earth can fry the dizzy pickup in no time.
