engine gearbox package
Discussion
Hey there guys,
I am just about to start the journey into the Ultima..
I need to know what the cost of the power plant 350-400bhp, the porsche gear box, clutch flywheel and adaptor plate would be. All I am after is reliability, no oil leaks and very usable power delivery.
Is this the best set up or have other people muved away from the package? The other thing that worries me is the weight of this package?
Sorry about all the questions, but if you don't ask......

box will be about £1500
adapter flywheel starter clutch etc around £1500
headers/exhaust around £1500
Engine is on top... anything under £3k for a 400bhp rebuilt motor is cheap.
you will be extremelly lucky if you end up with a SBC that doesn't leak at all.

Don't forget all the Ultima parts - adaptor plate, clutch, flywheel etc This will add another £1.5k and then the exhaust is another £2k ish
What you will get for your money is a basic spec - if you bought a crate engine from somebady like Summit you would be talking GM Performance 350 HO which would put out around 330bhp and 380ftlb's for $3700 plus shipping. You would need to add the low alternator mount and a decent sump but that's only a couple of hundred dollars.
The AS range is pretty good but a lot more expencive - the same engine would set you back $6800 but will come with all the parts that you need to fit it in an Ultima.
If you can rebuild to "as new" then this is a cheaper option as parts for the SBC are very cheap.

All depends on your remit Lance. If you are a patient man then anything you can imagine is possible (within the realms of practicality) but, if you want to get on and build it so that you can use it as soon as, you may find yourself cutting corners. Only you know the type of individual you are and remember; We are with you every step of the way

Thanks mate, how long did you take to build yours and how much did you spend on the engine/box?
Cheers Lance

Too long and FAR far too much?
I did things a little differently to most in as much as I had my motor built first and then went about sourcing something appropriate to put it in. For me, the motor is the most important part and I did not want to build a car to a certain spec and find that come engine time, for what ever reason, I could not build the exact spec motor of my dreams and would therefore not be happy with the end result. Doing things this way round the actual details of the rest of the car would not be so important so as to hinder me achieving a goal. As it happened, the car took five years to come to fruition and during that time I was fortunate enough to build the car of my dreams as well as the motor. Remember what I was saying about knowing the type of individual that you are?
The car owes me well into six figures and it is probably the biggest achievement of my life so far. For some, building and owning an Ultima is something that they have done during their life, for me it feels very much that it is my life and everything revolves around it. I don't remember feeling this way in the begining and maybe I have let things get a bit intense but hey, what can I do, I am GTWayne!

I will shortly be selling the SBC engine, Exhaust, adaptor, starter etc that are in the Ultima I have just bought.
It is a well set up package that kicks out 400bhp. I am only selling because I want much more power and have been advised that best to start with a clean LS series engine.
Price will be around 50% of cost if you are interested.
Might also sell the gearbox too depending where I get to on torque handling capability.

The modern version of the Chev is commonly referred to as an "LS" engine.
LS1 = 5.7L
LS2 = 6.0L
LS7 = 7.0L
There are others but these are the popular ones, these are all alloy engines. There are also iron block versions.
If you want loads of info on them dig around on www.ls1tech.com/forums/ - especially in the "Conversions and Hybrids" section.
There's a few guys here with LS engines... I have a Magnacharged LS2 in mine.
