I've searched the forum and can't seem to find anyone doing an LS7 in the GTR. What type of exhaust, oil pan, motor mount, etc mods are required. Also, which transaxle are you using and why?

Thanks,
Paul

I am doing a SBC --> LS7 conversion in my GTR. Jeff Schwartz supplies the whole package, mainly the LS7 (incl. necessary adaptations, EFI), the complete exhaust incl. cats, and all necessary accessories (fuel pumps, senders&gauges, dry sump parts, etc). I only got from a German Porsche specialist a refurbished 996 GT2 box (with new internals and slightly changed ratios and LSD). Jeff did for me the adaptor and flywheel. Main reason to go for the GT2 box was that it is good for 680 Nm and is RWD, and you get spares. Also it is center/cable shift which I need because I am using a sequential/electronic gearshift system (will be changed now to a new version which which was developed for the GT2/3 box and works with one cable only and most parts sit directly on the transaxle in the back).
Hope that helps,
Peter

just a side note, but anyone with a LS engine could very easly swap to a LS7 style unit. you can buy LS7 block with forged internals and wet sumps for not too much money from the USA.

also i think all the sensors are in the same place as the LS2 (is that right??) so you only need a loom extendors to fit to a LS1 loom.

and while you there with the engine, why not go for a longer crank and a few more cubes?!?!?! lol

thanks Chris.

LS1/6 to LS7 is not quite as easy as it seems. There are significant differences, including the entire loom/ecu, new headers, etc...

Not impossible, but something to know.

I didnt think it was that hard to do mine. In my mind the changes are just part of building the car. I'd rather do those modifications up front than deal with a tempremental, smelly small block later.

This is my list of things that need to be done to make an LS engine work:

1. Use LS to SB engine mount adaptor plates
2. Buy the correct (low profile) engine mounts
3. Use Corvette type AC pump with fittings on the rear and use spacers so it clears the engine mounts
4. Use an adapotor block to allow attachment of Ultima AC hoses to Vette AC unit
5. There's some hose work to do on both sides of the engine cooling system (minor stuff)
6. If using drive-by-wire - you need to modify the pedal box.
7. If using cable throttle body - you need to use a Camaro PCM and a cable Throttle Body and you may need to modify the cam on the throttle body. The Ultima pedal gives about 40mmm pull on the cable, you need about 60mm on a 90mm throttle body.
8. If you are going to run a charcoal canister as part of your emissions system (catches fuel vapour from the tanks and stops your garage smelling - and saves dolphins), you will need to modify the lower neck of the fuel fillers by adding in some spigots, two one one side and one on the other. One small spigot to attach fuel-tank pressure sensor, and one larger one in each side to attach the purge lines.
8. You will need to either run stock 05 Vette cast iron manifolds, or get headers made - there are two people I know of that can offer headers.
9. There's some minor wiring changes in the engine bay - lengthening some wires.

If you do a search you will find all of those matters discussed. If the search isnt working, just click on my profile and look at all my old posts, I was involved in all discussions regarding the above. If you need any more help, PM me, I have loads of emails discussing these various items that will also help. Also make sure you read the forums on www.ls1tech.com.... especially the "Conversions and Hybrids" section.

The LS7 has a forged crank stock, Also a 58 tooth reluctor wheel, LS2 has the 58t now as well. You can't use a LS1 loom or ECU with it. We use a GM ZO6 ecu with custom harness and DBW pedal, maintains stock cold starting, air con interface, driveability.
We're starting a twin turbo LS7 Can Am project, also a 7.5 liter na LS7 next week, Liam's LS7 engine for his GTR should be shipping to the UK next week as well.
Cheers,
Jeff S

Wow am I excited. I bought my LS7 yesterday from Jeff Schwartz. We talked on the phone and he seemed as honest and forthright as everyone had told me he was. I got one with forged pistons. I bought the G50/52 from Bobby Heart at California Motorsports.

Can I sleep tonight. NOT!

Hi everybody,
Been away from the forum for quite a while now. Work has bee a real killer, and I haven’t spent any time in my garage during the past months. However……….

The Belgian customs officers gave me the best Christmas present. My LS7 engine had been stored in bonded warehouse for 3 weeks, since customs couldn’t decide on whether I should pay 9% or 21% in VAT. Just 1.5 hour before I went on Christmas vacation, they decided on 9% - where after I immediately spent my saving on 4 new PZero’s for my Cupra – 0.5 hours after my vacation had started.

I am sure Jeff Schwartz will provide great engines, and make it a real turn-key experience. I have found some other contacts, and they sold the crate LS7 for USD 13.000, and USD 14.300 all the additionals (Alternator, main belt + tensioner, airflow sensor, pedal assembly and starter, and a complete set of Corvette dialers as a bonus.) It is a normal Chevy dealer who has good contacts within GM Performance and if anyone is interested drop me personal mail and I will ask them if they’re interested to do it on a more regular basis. Anyway, it will land on my front door tomorrow at a total cost of EUR 11.527 incl transport and VAT. Great with a low Dollar!

I will need to do some more modz myself to get the engine in, which I would have avoided by using Jeff’s engine, but my budget has already gone haywire, and I still want a Spectrum 5 exhaust.

A colleague of mine is chief mechanic on Team Dessoude in this year’s Paris Dakar. Their buggy is equipped with a LS7, and I don’t think you could get a better stress test of an engine than Paris Dakar, so I am waiting for him to return as Professor LS7.

I’ll keep you posted on how the pre-fitting of the engine goes. I think it is the first CanAm with a LS7, so my space is a little more crammed, but theoretically, it should go in.
