Oh no!!!! (not quite as bad but still ashame)

Everything was going to plan, went to get the GTW from the paint shop (only one day late) and once he was fitted back up enough to drive he would not start, battery flat! Tried to jump start and my mate Paul the paint said 'I can smell burning'! After a bit of running around like chickenless heads we found the resister for the battery cut out switch burnt out, why?,; As yet, it is a mystery.
Suffice to say, I have run out of time and my good lady, out of patience. It is not worth rushing at this late stage and the unveiling will just have to be put on hold. On a positive note though the paint has come out really well and the car looks out of this world now it is all one proper colour. I have got to stick the side screens back in, re-sikoflex around the windscreen and do a few other bits and bobs but by and large we are ready to rumble once this electrical glitch has been sorted.
Merry Christmas to one and all and see you in the new year

Just not fair, is it? However, look on the bright side, the weather and roadsare really not good enough to risk trashing "my precious" at the moment so relax, eat loads of turkey and think how lucky you are not to have caught fire or had a large branchy thing fall on you. Happy Christmas!

Bad luck Wayne.
When do you plan to try again? Is the car shut away in the paint shop until they reopen?
I am on leave until 2nd Jan if you need any help.

Thanks for the kind offer Steve but I have the car back at home now and have in fact just had him running (much to some of my neighbours distaste I dare say). All seems well and the wiring issue was just a resistor in the earth line from the battery cut out switch which I think was some how damaged when we tried to jump start the car on Thursday. I already have a new one and will try to get it installed within the next few days. I have yet to connect the rear lights, fit grills, sikoflex glass etc. but hope to be out on the road over the holidays (and so the shakedowns begin!)

Have figured how that resistor got fried. The only time it's active is when then batt Key is not turned on. But if you try and jump the car it will have power because of the Jump leads. So jumpers on and Key off will fry that resistor......... Hope the switch is OK....
How come it did not happen when you came and fitted the sync ref last weekend do you think? (after all, we did jump start it the same way)

Can't agree with you on that one. The resistor will take the current it is designed for, no more no less. I don't have an answer as to why it went. It was connected from the engine side main cable, via the switch 1 contacts, then resistor, then to earth?
The resistor is only there to save the alternator should you kill the engine by throwing that kill switch. Without it, and whilst the engine was still running down, the alternator would be trying to charge to nowhere which does in the diode packs. If you don't use that switch to stop the engine (which could well be the case on a track/race car) you don't really need the resistor.

That's because we had the Batt Switch ON
This will only happen when you try and jump it with the Switch off
The car will still turn over with the jump leads connected, but will not start because the ignition is shorted because the batt switch is off....
Hence the Fried resistor..... Comprenda Sinure ???
Moral of the story always turn on the Batt Key when starting the car...
Happy Holidays Focks.....

Sorry bud but my Electrical Engineer has gone though this one with me, (he's the one that did the Electrical Drawings with me) and he said yes it will fry the resistor when connected to a external Batt source. It's a direct short on the ignition circuit, so without the resistor it would blow the ignition fuse. It dissipates the stored electrical energy via heat, which under normal circumstances is no problem due to the lack of current left in the circuit when the key is removed. But connect another battery to it and it will just keep heating up... Just hope to god He hasn't fried any thing else....

Good lad
"battery flat! Tried to jump start"
I though you had a gel battery, are you not ment to jump start them?
My one died very quickly after I did it a few times, I have one of these optimates now.
