Whilst the engine is on holiday in America I thought I'd address a a couple of things that could add......err......further excitement to next year's Ultimarizing.

I've jumped on Lutz's band wagon and ordered a OEM 4th (30 to 29 (0.9670)) and a PHII custom 5th (32 to 22(0.688)) for my G50 03.

On paper this makes a top speed of 227mph at 7000rpm and the 4th bridges the gap between stock 3rd and 5th to ensure no extreme rev drop. It also means on track work the stupid 4-5th end of straight change dilema becomes old news.

Whilst the box is in bits - LSD do I or don't I? What do I gain and what do I lose (apart from the cash!!)

Answers not on a post card.............

Hi Lucky,
A lot of people will advise against it b/c of the understeer issues. I'm not fond of the quaife type. I think if I was going to do it, then I would get one from PHII like one of the GT2 diffs. One that you could take out and adjust and tune for different tracks.

I like the sound of the PHII product - he knows his onions (as we say). Nice how it was, to have the Ultima Angels decent on my pad, but I don't think that my biscuit supply, powder coating or simply my patience, would want to see a box off scenario ever again.

When you say 'take out' you mean box off, yeah?? So whatever I do, I want it to stay in for good.

I've only done a couple of tracks now....and I feel the balance between over and under is pretty much spot on. Turns in nice and sharp and bites until you squeeze too much and then the back starts to break gently. If I got more understeer though, I'd be ploughing up a few more cones than usual. No?

Yeah. And this is why I have kept my open diff.. Mid corner understeer is what to keep in mind here. Remember, the Ultima did very well on a skidpad so it is heaps better than most cars to start with. Most of the guys will tell you that if you do a lot of driving in the rain then LSD will be prove very usefull. If your track days are dry, though, an open diff seems to suit the car better as stock.

Just the answer I was looking for....that's saved me a few quid. Hard driving either track or road, will be done in the dry, so I thing open is the way for me.

Any others for or against open diff?

I think that you should most positively and definitely get an LSD fitted in you G50. Oh, and by the way, did I mention that I have just such an article for sale?

Lucky P... when I first read your header for this post I thought you were asking for advice on taking drugs! I was going to say that LSD would most certainly "add......err......further excitement to next year's Ultimarizing."

Having driven a car with almost identical power to mine that didn't have an LSD like mine, I'd not be without one.

and there is plenty you can do to improve the front end grip to match.

I have the Quaife unit, it seems to help me get the power down a bit better than before, though I can't say what it's like compared to the friction plate type.

From what I read, I think the friction plate type can a bit on/off, and the plates themselves need changing occasionally just like a brake pad/clutch, so if you don't mind getting box in and out, it might be a good choice, but otherwise, the gear types seems ok to me, but it's not adjustable, so you can't really tweak it to suit a track.

The Quaiffe one cost me about £1k to get it installed, and I had to take the box to them, though they could probably install those gears for you as welll...

Seems like horses for courses then. My GTR had LSD, the Can-Am doesn't. I find the turn in much better on the Can-Am with less washout (none in fact).

As Andy said, there's other things you can do to tune it out, but personally, I'm happy without it.

It's a Getrag, but I didn't source it from the factory.

peterspg - that's easy, just don't fall off the track

I have both, plate type and the Quaife. The plate type,
worked well in the first box but if you track it a lot the plates will need replacing on a regular basis.
The Quaife
is an excellent piece of kit, it improves the front end of the car a lot(IMHO) and makes it far more throttle responsive, in the tighter corners at Croft I could drift it!
