I saw a gen 1 sbc plastic engine at John Woolfe racing in beford, might be worth giving them a bell to find out where they got it from.
Also saw a gen 1 mockup on ebay once, they wanted several hundred pound for it - found an old block for £50 in the end.

These mock-up blocks do allow you to bolt your accessories to it to check fitment. From their website: "These molded plastic motors are true to actual dimensions and include threaded inserts for actual mounting of cylinder heads, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, oil pan, timing cover, water pumps, and bell housing. Available as a block only, or add optional cylinder heads, intake manifolds, and other available accessories."

I have seen these blocks used a lot at LS1tech.com. Mostly used for conversions which could also include an Ultima. If you want something to test fit that you can lift by yourself these are great!!

I saw that but this would mean purchasing real alternators and mounting brackets for trial fitment which is a bit hit and miss in the UK. Same goes for the sump, pas and other odds and ends. For an ultima I would have thought that most people already know which bolt on's are needed. If so an engine could be bought kitted out with the right ancilliaries.

I've used those plastic shit blocks, they are not accurate.
You can't believe the amount of problems I've had having to rework stuff that didn't fit when the real block was fitted. (not only the LS versions)

I do the same. I bought scrap warranty returns from the early days of gen 3 engines but they're out on loan or in use. They're not to heavy once gutted out.
