but have no idea if it's possible.
I’m sure that I’m not alone amongst the CanAm fraternity when it comes to the frustration of opening and closing the doors, especially by people not used to these doors who just let go of them. They get to a point where they either open fast at the end of the gas strut travel and almost smack the front bodywork or when closing if you don’t hold on to them they slam shut.
What want to know is, whether there is some sort of damper that can be attached to the ‘other’ side of the hinge to counteract these forces?
I guess that the weight of the doors is the issue when the screens are attached etc…….

I know what you mean Graham. I had the same issue when taking friends out in the car last year. Once I get my car back on the road I'll work out an engineering solution for it. I did some work on pneumatic label applicators some years ago and know what will do the job on our doors. You can get small adjustable shock absorbers that will do the job. It's just working out a solution for mounting them that will be the hard job.
I'm also working on a solution for using small linear actuators to positively lock the rear clip. I have done some work on this already and have worked out a failsafe solution should electrical failure occur. I should have a pair of linear actuators in week or so and hope to have a prototype built soon. This system will do away with the standard catches altogether. Once built I will be offering them as a DIY kit.

I have had the same problem, if the gas struts are too strong they "ping" open, but close ok, if too weak, they dont open and slam shut. A cure would be great. Can you get the shocks the same length as the exisiting gas struts? (assume they are still used on the newer cars?)that would just be a replacement then???
Andy, whilst I appreciate the fact that being an accountant you are quite used to 'establishing' facts as you, rightly or wrongly (and in this case it is most definitely the later) may see them, I prefer an altogether more scientific approach. Research, surveys and speaking to folk on the subject have resulted in a resounding thumbs up (on average) that the COLOUR BLACK is the majority favourite and make no mistake.
Given that I trained as a Sign writer earlier in my working life I consider myself to have more than a reasonable understanding of shades, hue and the Munsell colour scale (look it up if you don't believe what you are reading) and therefor must be indefatigably correct when I say: BLACK IS BOSS!!!!!
Dictionary definition of BLACK; 'of the colour of jet or carbon black, having no hue due to the absorbtion of all or nearly all incident light'.
May I also take this opportunity to say that, and I do believe I am correct here, although you don't smoke I highly recommend that you get yourself a pipe, stick this lot in it and smoke it!

No Keith, not me, I never seemed to have both at the same time (Hair but no Ultima/sense but now I have the Ultima but no hair? Go figure)
The good thing is with sense comes clarity and purpose hence the choice of the one and only colour that carries any weight and has an abundance of credibility, BLACK! And as for r e d, I know I most definitely do NOT WANT TO thanks. If I should feel the inclination to masquerade as Postman Pat I would more than likely get the costume first, followed by a black and white cat with the r e d mode of transport being put of until the very end exercise. Obviously you on the other hand have approached your Postman Pat obsession head on and acquired the said novelty coloured vehicle first and for that I applaud you sir, you are a very brave individual.

- used to 'hot' weather)!! On a serious note, the house-buying lark (necessary to get a bigger garage to build the Ultima) that I'm going through at the moment is doing my head in!! Maybe if Gordon Brown could give me a stamp duty exemption (hell even a discount would do!!) we could have done a deal on the bikes. As it stands at the mo, my bank account is in for a pounding, but I'm determined not to let anything / anyone (even the missus!!) derail my plans for building an Ultima. Just don't talk to me about hand-outs to illegal immigrants / crims or funding useless 'oxygen thieves' at the minute!!
