Guaging Interest in HID headlights

I posted this on the US forum and wanted to guage interest elsewhere if we can make something work here. The goal is to see if we can use a smaller headlight housing to allow that cover to be smaller thus giving more clearance to the front tires. Just about every car I have seen has wear marks on the back of the headlight cover even after they were trimmed (in some cases a lot of trimming was done and it still rubbed).

As I said I am trying to determine how much interest there would be in such a kit in the hopes that Nathan would produce them and another option would be out there for everyone.

Great idea! HID units give much better lighting and if it solves the issue with chafed housings then it must be seen as a positive step in the right direction.

Small point of order. Vehicles with HID headlamps require, by law, washer units be installed.

Thanks, that is pretty much the same conversion kit that is available from www.ledgauges.com/
I know those are retrofittable, but I am working with one of the guys at LED Guages to see if a smaller housing can be used as well. But those ballasts would be part of the install.

Well most of the builds are customized here and there. It would probably not be too hard to rig up those little sprayers near the lens. But thanks for the info. I will keep that in the back of my mind to consider.

Do the covers get hit by the inside or outside of the tyre, or both?

One way to combat this problem may be to fit different tyres. I have been looking at using Yokohama AO 48's Front= 225/40x18, Rear= 315/30x18. They will have to be stretched on to the rims a bit (maybe a nightmare for the tyre fitter but all that will be required from the likes of us is to part with our cash for the privilege, easy peasy!) but if anything, this is likely to utilize all of the tread and some but needs more research yet and the first person to try it may end up with a set of slightly narrower barely used surplus to requirements rubber for sale cheap as a result. The upside is that although they wont last like Goodyear's or Pirelli's they will grip (in drier weather) almost as well as a hard slick. Go on, be brave someone, give it a go.

In fact this is one problem with the car that I cannot understand why the factory has not addressed. I mean every product goes through a stage of post-release development to iron out minor problems and all that is required for this is the remaking the mould for the perspex headlight covers and the mould for the headlight surrounds. It would seem that if the covers had 1/2" or so bigger bulges in them, the standard headlights could move forward. While at it, the mould should have a vent tube built in, or even the fan like Steves.

Factory....... have you considered doing this?

Boys and Girls (add names)- would you buy them if the factory did? If the factory wont and interest is enough I'll get it done over here. Ive got a mate here that does replacement fiberglass and CF parts for bikes, his moulds cost him only GBP100-GBP150 for a part and parts are very cheap after that. Note that I dont want to be treading on the factories toes, but I'd like to solve this on my car.

Wayne suggested trying a 225/40-18, well that's what i've got on the front and guess what, the tyres still rub the headlight housing. Interested to know what the yokohama's are like though.
