I broke one of my factory supplied GKN axles recently with my 500hp 5.7L LS6 and previously broken the stub shaft within the rear upright. With my twin turbo 6.6 L ready to go in I'm worried. What are the options other than making one off parts?
I talked to a custom axle mfg and they recommend 108mm CV joints at both ends (stock is 108mm and 100mm) This means making an adaptor, and having already broken the stub shaft, I'd rather not do that. What have you other guys with twin turbos done?
Thanks
Jeff S

Jeff, the only TT GTR I know of (that has logged some miled) is Kurt Dobson's in Utah. He ran it at the Silver State a few years ago. Here's a link to the car page. And, here's a link to the company page.

I have a line on some 100mm cv joints, heat treated 4340 cages and tool steel balls broached for the 28 spline 31 mm diameter axles. The down side for you is they aren't available until Sept. The weakest link ,I believe ,is the stub axle, which I don't have an answer for. If you're interested in the cv joints contact Craig at Taylor Race Engineering, the majority of the lot, 300 pairs ,are earmarked for a group in Austrailia www.taylor-race.com

I'm presently making some outer shaft adaptors for Wayne as I was worried about the outer 100mm Ford Joints taking 616lbs of torque on a regular basis....

Am having some Bespoke shafts made with the stronger 110mm joints on both ends at present.... Email me if you want to double up on the order. Im in Canada at present but will be home on 1st July if you want to Email me Jeff....

As for braking the ford Stub shafts thats a new one on me, the same diameter shafts take alot of abuse from our Cossy friends with no trouble. Perhaps that was a one off....

i know the brammo/spectrum 5 (i think) twin turbo ultima limited torque to about 650lbsft. this gave the whole drive train a chance of surviving the abbuse!

I thought there were a few guys here with twin turbo lexus, etc engines in scandanavia?
I've talked to Kurt Dobson as recent as a few weeks ago. He used stock stuff, kept the boost down and didn't have much time on the car. I've got near 35,000 miles on mine now, anyone else out there with more?
There's no way I'm gonna limit my 402 cid to 650 ft lbs, don't think my 50mm waste gates can be turned down that much, even if i could, I'm breaking stuff with the present engine. I'll check this other stuff. Also Richard told me the 100mm cv joints have been improved since mine were built, new stock stuff may work.
thanks
Jeff

I broke the outside Ford stup axle right off today. The start wasn't very hard and from 4500 rpm without any "Launch control boost". Now I need to find another solution. I guess it will be something custom made...

Hi Jeff,

I'm interested. Please give me more information regardning specs, capacity, price and delivery time etc. You can email me on mikael@kenson.nu

It's amazing how nice these cars work with turbos in combination with a high reving engine. The pull from 6500 to 8500 is fantastic

BTW from what Ford does the stubs come?

Are these the Ford Granada/Sierra cosworth, rear stubs? If so i'd like to know what your doing Jeff.
We have them on the TVR LS1 race car and sheared the shank straight off.We were thinking of machining a small internal radius where the shank meets the bearing face to give it some strength.
As for the CV's www.difftechnics.com.au have uprated ones for the Holden Commodore/GTO,to my suprise when i had a looksie under my Commodore are the same size and bolt pattern to Ford stubs.

Talked to Ford today and they don't support customers with this part any more. So we have to fit parts from the scrap heap to our ££$$££$£ cars

(on the possitive side, they cost "nothing" as scrap so we can have a few as spares)

May I suggest you use ProSport hub/bearings/stubs?

these have bigger bearings, stronger stub etc, and although they still use 100PCD outer CV, that's not an issue.

Yes you may, but please also explain what it is... Never heard of ProSport.

one of these:

they were built as a single serise car in the 90's, share more than a few bit's with Ultima's (debatable which bit's came from what!).

Early ProSports had issues with the rear hubs/bearings etc, so there were upgraded versions done (one notably by Will Hewland who raced in the serise). These had custom made stubbs/flanges with bigger bearings etc. the uprights although very simmilar to Ultima, are somewhat beefier in some critical areas (like the brake mounts etc). they should just bolt right up in place of the Ultima ones, making it a simple upgrade.

the only real issue is where to get them from, there were only so many made, although I belive there are some castings still about.
