Na - I'm in on Monday.
I'm thoroughly pi55ed off and confused at the moment. Here is the situation:
Engine failed emission - O/S 0.18% CO Pass HC 909ppm Pass, n/s 0.21 CO Pass but HC 1345ppm - FAIL!
The symptoms were that I couldn't get the thing to idle below 1100, my eyes were stinging like sh1te when trying to adjust the throttle stop. It would stall at junctions and low speed manouvering is a nightmare.
Factory say go to the retest and phone them to have instruction on how to lower the HC during the test. Once passed they will agjust it during the safety check FOC.
GRL say that they will alter the timing.
Gail at AS says (from my description of the symptoms) that he think the carb is bleeding and needs a clean
and Charles Dunn thinks that I should get rid of the electric choke!!
Well I just wanna pass the fooking SVA
Anyone got any ideas??????????
Pete

Welcome to the world of high performance motors!

He is good at tuning motors. It will be different when he is done with it.

.....the carb is bleeding..
The EFI guys will tell you those words are in the wrong order

I binned my electric choke within a couple of weeks and not regreted it.
I also get confused when mechanics and engine builders slag each other off. I don't know why they do it?
Yeah - I rather got that impression a few minites ago. Being a Project Manager by trade, I can't help trying to get people to talk to achieve a common goal. I put this to Ian, and was told in no uncertain terms that this is what he does for a living and he won't need to talk to Gail. Hush my mouth!
I don't doubt for a minute thet Ian will resolve my issue, I just wanted to ensure that what he had planned had the endorcement of the guy who put the engine together - make sense?
This'll test my love of the unknown to the max - just wait for the next installment!

retarding the timing will idle it better
Nope retarding it will generally make the idle worse. But it will start better and it will be less likely to detonate.
I found with my engine (non AS) that as supplied the timing was OK at 3000 rpm+ on load but far too retarded at idle. Changed the vacuum can and the advance weights to get good advance at idle but not too much at higher rpm. Now it idles well, doesn't atall when you brake and pulls like a train.
PS mine also had (massively) high HC on SVA turned out that the fuel pressure was too high. The float valve in the carb couldn't stop the fuel flow so it just ran it into the engine which spat it out the back. The clue was the 5mph fuel economy!

Ian at GRL checked my fuel pressure as part of his process of tuning and recommended a pressure regulator for just that reason. Wasnt causing a problem with the Holley but felt it was worthwhile.. so I fitted it.
He is a good man at tuning these carbs so just trust him! He is very thorough.

I have no regulator - I asked the factory but was told it wasn't necessary - could this be my problem?
Maybe, but to be honest your HC's are not even on the same planet as mine were (I was somewhat >2800!!!).
The only way to be sure is to measure the fuel pressure at the carb inlet, 3 to 4 psi is more than enough, if it is more than 6 psi you will need a pressure regulator to reduce it. I had about 15 psi but I was not using the factory electric fuel pumps, so the chances are that if you have the factory set-up them you'll be OK. Wait and see what your man from GRL says.
I would think that Ian will be keeping the car for a few days is that not so?
If so, he could get a regulator from say Real Steel overnight if needed. He tuned my canam without the reg and I added it later.
The reg is not just an emissions issue. From memory, my pressure was 7psi and Ian was aiming for 3 to 4 for non-track work. I adjusted the pressure for my track sessions.
