why use the sidepot for airintake?
Discussion
On the GTR, yes, I think its best to take air into the engine from the top scoop on the car and save the side pods intake for the oil cooler and aircon condensor. Most people with a single throttle body on their motor, like an LS(X), or going with a modified plumbing setup to the side pods. Personally, I built an airbox that went up on my sports and blocked it off to the top scoop.

what ever way you look at it the hottest part of the rear clip area is at the top i have seen temps of 60 degrees in traffic my old carb used to hate this .did some test and the coolest place is in the sidepods ,been out tonite for a spin outside air temp was 22 degrees temp at top of clip 55 degrees air intake temp 24 degrees !!!!!drawing air from side pod has been the coolest way to get more power
if i had been using the air from the top of the clip (55 degrees)i would see a 15% reduction in fuel !!!!acording to ecu map ,must equal a fair lump of power .simon

One of the race preped cars I saw a while ago had the scoop extended right to the top edge of the screen. It may have been one or both of the cars across the North sea somewhere. I agree that would be one way to make the scoop effective. The other would be to put a pair of fans in the scoop. This would add the benefit of flow at lower speeds.

Looks good.I am thinking of maybe having a snorkle type of inlet permantly fixed to the induction setup and protuding through the rear clip remaining static when clip is opened. donkeasy; Double skining will help to reduce heat soak and have you thought of installing an extractor fan in the rear grill to help heat exit the engine compartment whilst at slow speed or stationary? My exhaust runs along the top of the G50 and gives me enough room to mount 2 X Spal fans that shift 1160cfm, don't know how well they work yet or indeed if they work but will keep you posted.

I ran the Canam with a Holley on the 500bhp engine for a year before switching to EFI. With the Holley I didnt have the problems with the high intake air temperature but did have the hot air blasting out of the scoop when stationary.
So, I adapted it for the EFI air filter shown in the images.
The IAT seems to stabilise about 5 to 10 c above ambient air temp. Now I dont get the hot air blast for the passenger and driver!
I think another heat problem though is the fuel temperature. In a carb there is a lot of heat passed to the fuel in the bowls with the possibility of vapour locks etc. I was concerned and when I went EFI I would attempt to minimise any heat buildup in the fuel and rather than fit the swirl pot anywhere on the bulkhead, I fitted it low down on the chassis under the header along with the high pressure pump and filters. A heat shield goes between the exhaust header and swirl pot. The pot remains cool but it is surprising the amount of heat picked up by the unused fuel as it circulates through the fuel rails and back to the swirl pot with the rest going through the tanks. I shielded the fuel rail feeds and pipes.

The rear of the car is a negative pressure area..... Air will get sucked through the holes (on roof and in side) by the negative pressure at the rear.
Strange though that hot air comes through the top rear clip gap when moving very swiftly in the Canam! Just place a hand over the clip gap behind the seat backs and you can feel considerable flow and heat. I would love to see the wind tunnel flows for the full screen canam because that generates a low pressure just behind the seats and I think that this gives rise to the hot air sucking out of the gap and scoop if you dont block it off. Do I remember a factory recommendation to seal off the scoop on the Canam?
I think the roof scoop from around the north sea must be mine! After hitting this site for a few times when searching the internet for Ultima i finally registered. Im the mecanic that runs the Ultima from the Belcar.
As soon as i find out how to attach a picture i'll share a picture of the roof scoop.
