Has anyone heard any more about this car?? www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=1&f=20&t=139671&h=0&hw=hyabusa

I admit to being a bit cynical of the power claims (like most on here). Even saw a video of it a few months back, but have never heard or seen the engines running.

Shouldn't we have had some news by now?

hi gaz, last i heard was when i attended Autosport show in January. A member of staff there told me that within a couple of weeks we would see some figures/videos, but ive seen nothing anywhere about it since. i too am a little cnical about the claims but i'm very interested to see the results of the project. always good to see someone 'pushing the envelope'.

Thanks for the update Dave.

I do want to see this car running!
Like you, I have the utmost respect and admiration for someone prepared to have a go at such a radical project like this

I had heard that there were a few teething problems to be sorted. Something to do with the diffs/drivetrain setup.

I spoke to Chris (Mr.Z-Car himself) at the Kit car show the other week and asked how things were going with the 2X bike powered Ultima. He said the steering was causing a problem at the moment and they are looking at using some type of power assistance but not sure what yet.He did say that although not earth shattering off the mark, mid gear acceleration is mindblowing. The car weighs in at 980kg currently.I guess we will all have to wait a little longer to see the finished article.

Turbo Busa engines are about 350bhp x 2 = 700
My LS6 powered GTR was 1000 Kilos.
Waste of a great car.

For those interested...A friend of a friend (specialist busa engine tuner here in the UK) has recently worked on two busa engines destined for a GTR over in Spain - when asked for a little more info he responded with...

"It had 2 hyabusa 1300 turbo engines. Both in the back, both mapped to the same motec 800 ignition and fuel system. Both engines running 8 injectors each. One engine driving rear wheels and one driving front wheels, through a proshaft and diff unit. Both engines produced 450 bhp each. The guy that owns it is in Spain and is still building it"

I can see the appeal of these in smaller lighter cars, but not an Ultima, imo part of the appeal is to have a huge V8 sat behind you, not a high revving 4.

Be interesting to see how durable they are too, especially running that sort of power, nigh on 3 times std.

My sentiments exactly. I am interested to see the finished article from an inquisitive standpoint and although would never dream of anything other than a rip roaring V8 in an Ultima, I wholeheartedly applaud anything that deviates from the norm as it quite often unearths solutions to other problems/situations that need addressing.

Bike engines in cars are fine for track use only - complete 'pants' for the road in my opinion. There is no substitute for cubes and even if they are pushing out the claimed bhp, will be peaky as hell! Innovative thought but don't think you can beat a stonking V8 for the Ultima!

Have you driven one on the road? Only problem with them (Busa engined) is a snatchy clutch, that engine in a sub 500kg car is not peaky, they're quite happy to trundle around in 6th at 30-40mph. In the right car, they're great imo

In bikes they are indeed awesome and pretty impressive in a light car too but the main problem is reliability, although it always amazes me how well the clutches seem to stand up and last. As with any highly tuned motor, when they work they are fantastic (as pals of mine with Cossie's will testify) but if you are to pay for this by spending as much time under the bonnet as behind it, count me out every time. Any 'specialist' type of modified performance car and a certain amount of under bonnet time has to be factored, but to much is a chore, after all, apparently there is life outside of this type of pursuit, can't see it myself but I must start looking, don't like cooking and cleaning.

You're right about the Busa engine being a great bit of kit but only in the right application (500kg car). The Ultima is unlikely to ever be able to achieve these sorts of weights and putting 2 Busa engines in one doesn't necessarily translate to being suitable for a 1000kg car even if only down to the synchronisation of the fuelling systems and drivetrain complications. Snatchy clutch = unpleasant road manner in traffic in my opinion (please note this only an opinion). As for trundling around in 6th, it would depend entirely on the gearing setup. The Busa engine does have unbelievable torque for a 1300cc motor but 4cyl bike engines in general don't like being laboured and thrive on revs to give peak torque and bhp.

Have been a passenger in a Westie Megabusa on a track and was gobsmacked by the sheer balls-out nature of the beast - massively entertaining on the track but too nervous / twitchy / snatchy for my liking on the road.

All very interesting and inovative, but no thanks, one school of thought no one can argue with is 'there ain't no substitute.......' you know the rest.thumbup
