Faces on the factory gauges

I have added an oil temperature sender to my sump, and a switch on the dash so that the water temperature gauge will read water or oil temperature. I have calibrated both senders and made a replacement card for the gauge that shows both scales. The question is, how do you open the gauge to replace the face? These are the factory VDO gauges with white faces.
That will probably be quite difficult as I think they are press fit. ie the bezel is pressed/formed around a lip on the gauge canister.
Are you sure this is the best way to do it, another dedicated gauge must be the preferred option. Then you can't forget to switch it over and miss an important event!
