Hi All

Both car's are stunning BUT I can't decide.... my brain says the GTR as it'll be cheaper to run etc etc that sound the 355 makes...
well it could be worth the hassle, anyone on here had both? would be good to here peoples experience's

I was considering a 355 after the GTR, but after seeing a few, I decided that I'd be stumping up a fair wedge for what is effectively an old car for the 355. The dash and switchgear look as if they've come from a 70's Rover!

For the same sort of money, I'd get a brand new car, which I could customise to my personal taste (or lack of) and which handled and went better than the dancing donkey could ever dream of.

Love the body styling of the 355 which is still one of Modena's best designs, but pound for pound to buy, it's no contest.

Don't even start to compare the running costs!!!

I have both. Right from the start let's clear up the cost thing: a 355 is lots cheaper than a top spec Ultima. Believe it or not it is the truth.

The Ultima is on another planet with regard to performance. It is a race car. You will never, ever be able to approach the handling, braking or acceleration limits of the Ultima on a public road. You will crush everything at any track day that you go to.

If you want a great street car that loves to blast around on twisty roads get a Ferrari. Make sure you educate yourself about the problems the F355 has before getting one. Get one that has had the exhaust manifolds replaced and has had a recent major service. Go look at the car, see what the interior looks like and find out how much it will cost to fix it. Get a friend to take you for a ride in one. The car has a balance that not available anywhere else. Get a GTS.

If you want a race car get the Ultima.

Thanks guys!, had a real good look at the issues 355's have... as nice as they sound... they sound like a nightmare if there's problems, and to be honest I'm not rich! it seems they'd be a rear drain on cash..

GTR it is then!! good to hear how fast they are! but how real world fast are they?? as in cornering/brakes etc? sure they sound fast in a straight line but would like to know! I race GearBox Karts so used too real speed :-)

Your best bet is to give the factory a ring and arrange to go for a test drive. Someone else's opinion of fast may not be the same as yours. You may find that they are faster than you think.

I believe that Ultima still holds the records for 0-100-0 and the lateral G aswell.

Ive had a 355 and I was not that impressed.

Had a 964 C4 Carrera with RS flywheel, clutch, tuned length exhaust and Turbo brakes... I bought the 355 to replace it, but then found the 964 was more fun so let the 355 go after 8 months. Had an Escort Cosworth at the same time and the Ferrari was 3rd place behind that also.

Nice for a pose when you first buy it... smells great, feels great and sounds great. But not something you can get in and thrash without worrying about ridiculous bills. Had the cambelt changed when I bought it, it only had 16,000km on it but did it for peace of mind as Id heard horror stories...... from then on I was always worried about breaking something.

Go for a ride in a Ferrari and a ride in an Ultima and that will tell you what you should buy.

I have had both and the performace car is the Ultima. The 355 is nice to go around town in but not a real supercar.

I've never heard so many bad comments about such a great car. I've driven plenty of Porsches and have yet to buy one, they are good cars but not what I'd want in the twisty mountain roads. The 355 has an all alloy driveline that is as near the middle of the car as possible and very close to the ground. It is a coilover double A-arm suspension that is completely adjustable. It is a blast to drive. Now back to Ultimas!

If you think that you are getting a low price performance car with the Ultima think again, it isn't a low priced car. For the performance it delivers it costs nothing.

Cost is relative. The Ultima is very cheap for what it does and the performance market it belongs to.

If you want performance then the choice is easy. If you just want to own a ferrari then the ultima isn't for you. You can't compare the performance between the two in any way.

In the UK you can buy a 1yr old 500bhp GTR with AP brakes and wing etc for around £40k.... I'm sure a 355 won't be much less than that. These cars are often sub 3000miles as well.

The older sport models offer the same performance and experience but with older styling (same kind of age as the 355 though) and around a £20k upwardsprice tag.

Also worth considering is that Ultimas are also very easily upgradable. Buy a car with 400bhp and later sell that engine and drop in a 550bhp one.. or maybe fit a procharger etc etc.

I'd love to build one!! really would but sadly have to work 80+ hours a week so nooo chance.....

Anyway the car sounds like the nearest thing to my Kart looking at the data! sounds great :-).

Forget the stats....go to the factory and ask Ted to take you for a run, I flew all the way from Hong Kong to do it....it will leave you with only 2 questions if you are going to buy rather than build.

Like I said, I owned both. The 355 is a great car. I owned the 1995 model. Was a blast to drive and had a great sound. On track days it cant compete with the Ultima.
