Ok so I took the top off and found something suspicious lurking in the rotor's centre:

And the centre of the cap looking like burnt plastic and metal, plus a bit of wear on the bits that connect to the HT leads:

And these were the loose items, both about 4mm in diameter:

Tell me this is a simple fix - buy a new dizzy cap ?

cheers
Roger

Hi Roger

You just need a new dizzy cap, and may as well replace the rotor arm while your at it. It's just the electrode from the cap that has broken off. Nothing to worry about.

Looks like the brush has fallen out, judging by the look of the cap it may be because the part of the cap that is supposed to hold the brush has disintegrated. That looks like the remains of a circlip in there, is it metal?

So could this busted electrode have caused these problems:
- engine won't idle
- engine won't pull below 3000
- car won't do steady state driving
- revs happily as ever though

These all happened at once, during my last drive, which had been lovely right up until someone threw a switch and the above all started.

Yes, suprised it ran at all, basically it was breaking down under load hence no power, won't idle(misfiring) suspect, You were able to rev the engine as this puts no load on the engine. Put a new cap on and try.

The spark was having to jump the gap where the plunger should have been then the plug gap. As compression pressure increases i.e. under load, it is more difficult for the spark to make the jump until it all became too much for it.

Ok so where can I get a replacement delco remy distributor cap & rotor arm - D336 ?
I know it sounds lazy but I've tried google and a few hits without any joy.

And will I need to get the timing checked now I've replaced the cap & arm (not moved the latter) ?

cheers
Roger

Real Steel would be my first call.
There are others but I don't have names.

Your timing will remain the same as long as you don't move the dizzy.

Yes REal Steel sorted me out, for pennies too, always makes me laugh with glee how cheap the dirty bits are on our supercars.

Don't say things like that they may be watching.
