Sequential Gearbox? - Flight of fancy?
Discussion
Went to the Auto-sports show last week on Trade-day....coooo, it was very hard to concentrate on the job-in-hand when you have skinny, good-looking tyre promotion girls draping themselves all over the bonnets of cars with not-a-lot on, and beckoning you to join them for a photo session - I jest not!
Needless to say I declined!
Anyway - I digress. Silly Idea no 1:
Anyone explored the possibility of sourcing a sequential box for the GTR project? Pro-s and cons? - What about paddle shift?
Has any-one done the centre-shift option on a GTR rather than on the right?

It was UltimaCZ, see his post here:

I talked to Quaife a while back, about their sequential Porsche 'box. Would fit perfectly, but they said that any more than 500BHP, and it might let go. They do do a rally 'box that is bullet proof, but it would take a fair bit of modification to get it to fit. If I do get round to (Convince the wife to let me) building a GTR, I want a sequential 'box. Personally prefer a big lever rather than paddles, but that's just me.
Found out recently that UltimaCZ has used the SQS sequential shifter (central) in a getrag box (996), and he likes it!
Only problem as I undertand it is that the Getrag box has been checked out after 10k and is showing signs of excessive wear.
Now, I wonder if this is down to the box type or is it the shifter that is causing the wear...or is this a one off problem?
In addition I understand that there are no parts easily available for repair or upgrading the gears, so it is buy and shut-up with these boxes?
Like the idea of a Getrag with the SQS shifter, but if it means that the Getrag is going to troublesome, I wonder the wisdom of buying a far more expensive box with far more potential problems!
G50 seems to be the most solid way to go, but that means central shift is not really an option, and the SQS shifter is out of the question.
Anyone disagree?

The GT2/3 and twin turbo boxs are effectivelly 6speed large diff G50 interals in a completely new casing.... and they are cable shift so the sequential mechanism would fit.
They are not cheap but the internals can handle the highest power of all the porsche 911 range and all the std internals can be purchased or upgraded for race items (like mine has).
Of cause if you dig deep enough there are cable shift conversions out there for the std G50 box, but I suspect this may be cost inefficient.

When we checked the Getrag I had the sequential shifter installed only for a short time, so it was probably "normal" wear after 10.000 km, if used on an Ultima with a more powerful engine than in a 996 (especially much higher torque). I had it checked by a real Porsche/Getrag specialist, building Porsche race boxes, who stated that the wear was definitely higher than it would be on 996 Porsche at 10.000 km. But the box was still in good shape over-all and he did not want to estimate what mileage I could still do on it. The box is still ok after 16.000 km, does not show any problem during shifting (except the second gear mainly when cold, but this is exactly what I had on my 996 Carrera, so it is probably more of a genuine Getrag problem).
What concerned me more was that there are absolutely NO parts available for repair or upgrade (we wanted to change gear ratios). We have a good inside contact at the Porsche race department but even for them it would be impossible to get spares. The way it is built does simply not allow for repairs, if its broken you have to throw it away and get a replacement from Getrag/Porsche.
On one of our 3 Ultimas we had a problem with a seal (at a very low mileage), but not even that was available. Would have been crazy to throw a box away just because of a broken seal or bearing. Took us 3 months to find a comparable part and adapt the box housing so that it would accept this part. Was a total nightmare.
So my conclusion would be: the Getrag is an excellent box but simply too expensive given the fact that you can´t repair/upgrade it. When my box goes I will look for a replacement which is stronger and can be modified (must be cable operated, though). Probably going the GT2/3 route if nothing else will become available. Definitely want to keep the sequential shifter.
California Motorsports (CMS) builds G50 boxes for race teams. They also make a cable shift system. Check out picture numbers 1, 2, 4-6, 14, 18-24. The only question I have is "will it fit"?
CMS is/was also a supplier to many other "transaxle rebuilders". Many popular TA builders don't really build the boxes they sell; they only buy from CMS and resell.
I found CMS by calling some of the Porsche teams that race in the American Le Mans Series and asking them who builds their boxes.

G50's can be centre shift... I understand most of the ones sent to the US are centre shift 'cos those US boys only like to hold their knob in their right hand.....some sort of religious thing I believe.
Check out some of the US websites.... www.markkoch.net/canamMain.asp
or www.schwartzperformance.com/alienbuild.htm - both these cars have G50's with centre shift....

You can get a full sequential dogshift conversion for a GT3 box from Holinger in OZ....Will sound impressive - but would be a pain in the ass for street driving.
I emailed them a while back - the response is below..... big $$ for street cred.
You can still buy brand new G50's for about USD16K.

Dear Grant,
Thank you for this enquiry.
Yes the kit only fits the 996/997 GT3 cases.
Currently we use either a customers donor gearbox or purchase new cases,
ring and pinion , diff etc. from Porsche.
Price for the kit is AU$19,500.
We are currently looking into the possibility of manufacturing our own
cases, diffs and R&P but this wont be for 6 months or so.
Complete gearbox would be approximately AU$35,000.
I have attached some additional information but if you require any further
assistance do not hesitate to contact us.
Best regards,
Leigh Nash.

I don't recognise your pic as a G50. There are G50 boxes shown on their site but none with the shifter on.
Are you sure they do it for the G50?
