painting gearbox and engine sump

I am going to paint the gearbox while it is out. It's black at the moment and looking a bit tatty.
I thought silver would look best.
Do I just clean it up a bit, spray with etching primer and then a can of hammerite or something?

Would like to do the same with the sump, although not sure what colour. any ideas?

Your cleanup will need to be good if you want the paint to stay on so a steam clean followed by a solvent wash should do it.

Colour choice will have to be your own but I prefer silver.

I would not use Hamerite as it is too brittle. I would use an engine paint from someone like Frost.

Same again with the sump.

I steamclean the gearboxes, etch prime then use wheel silver and several coats of clear lacquer. Works well.

I tape,plug all the holes and sand blast the whole unit,good finish and no problems with any water ingress!

Frost do an ali etch. Use this on an unpainted box with pressure washer and it will look like new.
