Oh God don't get me started!...
Interesting subject which has cost me a lot of time just recently. In my quest for noise reduction I added a balance pipe a few weeks ago and this week made my silencers repackable. They went back on yesterday and I ran it this afternoon, the results are not conclusive but I think they are better and definately no worse! I am awaiting delivery of a sound meter I have just won off ebay so should be able to get some dB figures soon.
I have added my silencer modification for repacking to my website http://pb3.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/ on the "Miscellaneous Extras" page towards the bottom, the balance pipe stuff is summarised on that page too and more detail is given on the "Balance Pipe" page. I am in the process of creating a site dedicated to the repacking side at http://repack.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk

I think you can forget the standard pipes making it under 105db even if you're lucky.
The balance pipe that Phil fitted will help, but, if you want to hit a quieter track (<100db) you'll probably need new 'cans', usually you can get a custom packable exhaust for just over a grand (not with headers - just bolt on to the current ones), I think GMan and a few others have repackables from a place down in Oxford...

I seem to have deleted it from my site even though the link is still there... just sloppy I guess.
Mine was a prototype really however despite using straight through silencers it dropped noise by a genuine 8db's at 2/3 revs (5200rpm).
The secret is extra length IMO along with a balance pipe.
I have the problem solved for my next car as I'm adding another pair of silencers in each bank.... they are called Turbo's
