Clutch Problems

Just attempted to pull away for the first time under the engines own power and have found the following issue:

The slave cylinder appears to have full travel but at the same time does not appear to disengage.

Any obvious thoughts from anyone whilst we wait for the engine to cool down, prior to us delving deep within the bay!!?

Pull the lever right back to fully compress the piston back into the slave cylinder. Then move the lever forward again till the thrust meets the pressure plate. If this is some distance then I would suspect the thrust is not correctly fitted to the lever.
If only a small distance then I would suspect that the cylinder is not travelling as far as you think and you have air in the system.

Another thought. Did you just find that it grated when trying to engage? Have you tried putting it in gear, engine off, clutch down and have someone try and rock the car back and forth. If you put the clutch on the engine a while ago it may become stuck. In extreme cases I have started the engine, clutch down, in gear, all the brakes on to break a clutch free but that was a car left standing for some years.

When we looked closer found that we hadn't fitted it correctly, managed to take it appart last night and hopefully fit it again today.
