As per the title really, has anyone here kept a record of how much their racing has cost them?

You hear so many conflicting reports on how much motorsport costs and it would be interesting to see some actual figures. I wondered if anyone had kept a spreadsheet or something of the costs incurred at a clubman's level.

No because if I was aware of the true cost I'd probably stop doing it. eek

Racing has made me a liar - to myself, to my wife, to the bank manager & to virtually everyone else that ever asks!

I do actually keep fairly accurate figures, as i run on a very tight budget, and tend to stop racing each year when it runs out..

I do however refer to it in standard motorport units rather than £'s makes it sound less and non racers dont know how much your refering to..

1 standard motorsport unit is a grand as everything seems to be in multiples of that...

I think I'd probably chose denial if I took the plunge to.

In the meantime, if anyone has recorded it I'd be very interested to hear. Drop me a PM if you'd rather.

We kept a spreadsheet last year so we could apportion costs fairly (2 of us share the Clio Cup in my profile).

We had a (£2.5k) gearbox rebuild and a new (£1700) trailer, plus more tyres than we ought to as we've been running far too much camber for list 1a tyres (the settings we had were all for slicks as run in the Clio Cup).
But all told, a season in the Northern Saloon and Sportscars cost us a shade over £12k.

Or £5k if the wife's reading wink

I suspect it'll be substantially less this year (first year with a car is, in my experience always the most expensive).

hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe

in my experience that never happens, as because you dont have to spend as much after the first year, you always do..

We keep telling our wives selves this though. If I repeat it often enough it sounds plausible.....

Thanks for that. It is 'standard motorsport units' from here on! Sounds so much better.

when I raced in the healey championship a few years back now my expenses where as follows

200 quid per race entry - 10 rounds

100 quid in diesel to get to each event and fuel for the car

1000 to strip rebuild the engine at the end of the season

500 quid to strip rebuild the gearbox

4 new tyers per season 300 quid

Championship entry fee 100 quid

BARC membership 35 quid

Race licene 75 quid

500 quid on other routine maintenance during the season oil and fluid changes etc.

Assuming no offs or other big enpenses like new helmet or belts required due to msa rule changes etc

Basically if you tot it all up I used to spend around 5000 quid and it was real budget racing running the car myself etc.

My second season - a bit.

My third season - not at all.. wink

Although I did keep track on build costs for my new car for the 3rd season.

Only been getting things together for a week and have decided to stop adding it up.

Started with a £300 helmet budget, now have a stilo and HANS device for considerably more.

Race and test fees start adding up quickly too.

Would I change it? No just sell something else I don't use!

There are only two really important rules in motorsport, neither of which appear in the Blue Book which is odd:

1. Never add up what it costs, that knowledge will not make you happy,

2. If you break rule 1, never under any circumstances share that knowledge with your other half.
