Motorhome rental and towing
Discussion
Dear All
We will be off to Spa in June and the Ring in September and would like to rent a motorhome to keep out of the rain.
The problem seems to be we need the home from Wed morning (hull ferry) and will be back Monday morning, but all the renting companies only rent sat to sat and our long weekend becomes a 2 week rental - does anyone know of a company that could accomodate us.
In the longer term I would like to buy a motorhome but is a fully loaded motorhome with a 2.8 diesel capable of towing box trailer across Europe or do I have to buy an RV ?
All help appreciated as I know next to nothing about motorhomes

Talk to Xplore-It-Uk (google for them) for a rental deal & tell them I put you in touch (my neighbours). They may be able to help on a wednesday 'till monday deal if you talk to them nicely, but it is peak season. Make sure they know what the towing requirements are.
Towing weights of Motorhomes are critical as many manufacturers put so much stuff into the van chassis conversion that the towing weight can be quite low. Usually the more berths the motorhome has then the less it can tow. My 2 berth tows 2000Kg but a 6 berth on the same chassis may only be able to tow 1000Kg.
What does the car & box trailer weigh?
If you intend to purchase, talk to Moran Motorhomes (Ludlow) as the owner is a hillclimb champion (F1 engined single seater) and knows all about motorsport requirements & motorhomes.

You could try Benz Bavarian in Duffield. They have a could of motorhomes and I get the feeling have a more relaxed attitude to rental periods. If you contact them, mention Scott Guthrie at ASG Motorsport - I'm trying to squeeze some sponsorship out of them!

I'm pretty sure we used http://www.motorhomesdirect.co.uk/ once, they have a network of private owners they use. We rented an American RV for Spa a few years ago and although they'd only do a 7 day rental it went from when we wanted which was a Wednesday, it wasn't cheap though at over £700 plus there's the 7mpg fuel consumption although that was on gas.
I believe some people rent motorhomes at the track (they are delivered there) for Spa and Nürburgring for about half the above cost although I don't have any details and they are very basic European models not the big flash US RVs.
As for buying one yourself, not many European models can tow a car trailer of any weight legally as they tend to be overweight on the rear axle if not on the gross mass as well. The only sure way round it is to get a 6 wheeler job. With a 2.8 diesel, they do tend to struggle on the hills but with the one we borrowed last year it returned over 20 mpg fully laden with tools and spares and towing a trailer with a MK1 Escort on the back.
