Looking at hillclimbs, night rallies, time trials, that sort of thing. Near as possible to Southampton, using either an Elise or a 205 GTI. Any ideas?

A hillclimb would be my first choice I think, would be nice to run the Elise, but I'd also love to do an event like they did on that Top Gear - a timed rally thing. I don't really have the budget to buy a proper racing car or enter a series of any sort, and I wouldn't be fast enough to warrant it anyway. So, hillclimbs?

Options are:

Gurston Down series - regs not yet released. http://gurstondown.org/drivers.htm#regs
ASCMC series. See regs at: http://www.acsmc.com/
ASWMC series, see regs at: http://www.aswmc.org.uk/hilclimb.htm
HSA series, see regs at: http://www.hillclimbandsprint.co.uk/calendar.asp

Your cars would be able to run in any of the above. If you want to run at Gurston, you'll have to be part of a championship. Subtle differences between the regulations, and you may want to pick the series that has dates which suit you.

I'd recommend the hillclimb school day at Gurston. An excellent introduction and you get plenty of practice.

Autosolos run by local clubs are a fun and basically safe way to start. I do these on grass in the spitfire and it's great slippery sideways fun. Car needs a proper wash afterwards.

Yes, there's one being held at castle Combe today in the paddock. Has a big entry, now very popular.

Many thanks for all those links. This really is a most helpful forum. Much appreciated.

There's a few sprints at goodwood this year, first I think is on 30th April and being run by bognor motor club.

Brighton & hove motor club and Tunbridge Wells motor club also hold events there later in the year

hillclimbs are VERY unforgiving if you get them wrong. by their very nature they are narrow and getting it wrong is not a thought worth entertaining. sprints might be a wiser choice but the 205 would be ideal for 12 car rallies and that sort of thing, they are great fun and very social. the navigtation takes a while to get used to but thats for your navigator to sort out!

I don't plan on getting it wrong, just going very slowly!

205 GTI could go well in autosolo, bit like a sprint but on a tighter circuit so won't loose out on a lack of power compared to the later hot hatches.

I marshaled on one run by sevenoaks and district motor club at North Weald and it looked like a really good laugh, very relaxed atmosphere and no need for all the safety gear due to the relatively low speeds
