I started hillclimbing last season but never entered any championships. Having my 1st season under my belt I' like to enter at least one championship this season but not sure which one!

Wiscombe is my closest venue but I'm also hoping to visit Mamhead, Charmouth & maybe Werrington & Gurston as well as some of the Cornish events.

I've had a quick hunt on the 'net but don't seem to be able to find a conclusive answer. I'm running in Class A3 (Clio 172) if that matters.

Thanks Andy, how many events would you need to enter to make it worthwhile would you say?

for the price of joining you get all the regs sent to you so its worth the joining fee just for that alone,
saves all the phoning around to get regs sent to you for the events you want to do ,which clubs have you joined ?

44.69 in A3 - what the heck were you driving?

Unfortunately for you and the Clio, class 3 of the ASWMC is run for 1800-2600cc. The Clio won't be competitive. If you're serious about running in a series, I'd look for a championship with a 1400-2000cc class. ACSMC and HSA both have a significant number of SW events. ACSMC may be short of runners, and HSA has a more limited number of SW events (although plenty of good venues though).

Also, important to note that some series (like the HSA i think) allow Elises into the standard production classes. I know that they are excluded in the ACSMC series. If you're running a standard saloon car then the ACSMC may be perfect (there's a class for 1A tyres also). The number of competitors would be my only concern.

Cheers guys, I managed a 50.35 at Wiscombe last year, that was on 1A tyres & with a fluffed gearchange out of sawbench so I'm confident I could do sub 50. I have just acquired a set of R888s which I'm told will make a noticeable improvement so the Clio could yet be competitive (just!). I have also replaced a worn out exhaust & will be sorting a mis-fire issue before I compete again so fingers crossed.

Ah Porlock!! Do you realise I put that together in 1991 (20 years ago)!! Doesnt seem that long ago does it. I still has a desire to rekindle something there, it was a magic event wasnt it.

There is a specific Wiscombe championship, other than that the hills you mention form the major part of the ASWMC hillclimb championship.

The class winner in A3 at the "Five Clubs" Sunday meeting (Sunday is ASWMC day) last year was a 205 GTi, from an Audi A3. The majority of competitors in that class run cars around 2 litres, despite the capacity limit being 2600cc.

As has been said, the ASWMC run that part of the world Hillclimbing very well indeed.

Andy, what year did you do a 44.69 in your pinto escort?, that is a good time up there. I did Wiscombe in April 83 in my old Gp 4 BD Escort [ DKP 191T ] on rock hard Michelins and forest suspension, the best I could do was a high 45.
I did manage a 41.7 in 1996 in my Escort Cosworth, Roy Bray was there in his, he was non too impressed at being beaten in his neck of the woods, however, he got his own back at Longleat later that year, so it remains still, 1 all smile

Hillclimbing is great fun, a really good atmosphere, and IMO, Wiscombe is one of the best, love the esses!
Hopefully will be there next year, or poss this year in my “New” Mk 2.

Cheers

I think the results from that weekend show how modified the cars that run in the "production" class really are. There's a mini in the sub 1400cc class running 47sec! Also, there's no real difference between the A2 or A3 times. Lotus Elises aren't winning Class 2. Some serious bits of kit and a lot of money spent on engines..

If you're running a real road car in these events, you can't be competitve. But it would be plenty of fun.

The A3 is a 1.8T though which just falls under the 2600cc limit...
