HSA Hill Climbi
Discussion
HSA website has a "getting started" guide that tells you all you need to know.
Don't buy a Proban suit though, as they're no use from next year onwards. BTW it's a "Non Race B" licence you need, not a race licence. You'll also need some yellow tape for the battery negative lead and to knock up a timing strut. And gloves.

You need to cross reference the HSA regs to the MSA UK blue book (covers regs for all motorsport, and is available on line). Not an easy task but worth doing, and the getting started websites help a lot (could be out of date, so be aware)
Lists safety equipment, licences, tyres and issues such as the roll bar question. If it's not mandatory it's highly recommended. I'd definitely have one.

Thinking about entering my mx5 this year.
What do I need to get?
Race License
Helmet (which spec?)
Roll Bar (is this mandatory?)
Roll bar not mandatory, although sensible, especially if you've full harness belts (which are also not mandatory, if you're running as road-going). You need Nomex gloves as of last year. Need to join an affiliated club. Need race numbers and timing strut. That's it.What do I need to get?

ok thanks
so I'm thinking
Helment
Suit
Gloves
Timing strut
"On-off" sticker
Yellow tape on battery earth
"Tow" stickers
Car number stickers
Non race license
Club and entry fees
You may want to also consider registering for a championship as this will ensure you are sent the regs for each round. Usually only costs around £20-30. so I'm thinking

If you have a standard ignition key (i.e. not a button) then the scrutes usually don't insist on an on/off sticker. TOW stickers not required if the tow hooks are a contrasting colour to the bodywork, e.g. if you have silver ones that screw into a hole in the rear bumper (and your car isn't silver...) then they don't mind. If you have tow hooks the same colour as the car, just dip them in red paint or something. On our MR2 the tow hooks are quite a long way behind the bumper and sort of rust-coloured, so we put TOW stickers on.

Helmet/gloves/suit/boots.
Only been asked for V5 and MOT once (scrutineer at Shelsley Walsh)
Hope to see you at a hill climb or sprint in 2011. The HSA championship is the only one with a separate category for MX5s and for the past two years an MX5 has won the overall HSA championship. So far 5 MX5s have registered for the 2011 championship and I know of another 8 who may sign up. It's excellent fun and it's it's good to be in a class with similar cars. It was my first season last year and I did 15 events. I keep a blog at http://bobjacqs.wordpress.com. Best wishes, Bob.
