Can anyone tell me what makes a race seat “HANS compatible”? I’ve done some Googling and looked at the FAQ’s here http://hansdevice.com/s.nl/sc.5/category.22/.f but can’t find anything specific. I’ve a seat that I bought in 2006 before catalogues were emblazed with “HANS compatible” so I don’t know whether I need to replace an otherwise good seat.

My understanding is the fact that there is a bit more space for the HANS device between your head and the headrest, but I can't be sure.

I do know however, that HANS compatible harnesses are slightly thinner than normal ones so that they sit on the HANS device better. Having said that, I use a normal harness and have never had an issue, the same goes for the seat.

Cheers. My belts are out of date anyway so that's not a problem for me. I've been directed to this PDF http://www.msar-safety.com/pdf/HANS_Guide.pdf I'll study it in more depth this eveing but quickly reading through it I've come to the conclusion so long as my angles are ok the existing seat is fine.

Don't know, but I was told not to use Hans because the belt slots in the seat in my Sylva where two close together, which would mean the belt did sit on the shoulder pads right/staight

The shape of the back of a Hans compatible seat will be different to allow the hans device to 'sit in'. without it you'll find that the your head gets pushed forwards and ends up being tilted down as a result.

can you not ask the manufacturer or dealer you bought it from?
