Audi Quattro at Wiscombe last saturday
Discussion
cant see the pic either, but if it was Micks it was the ex Kieth Murray (dialynx owner) car. It used to be silver, then Audi colours before becoming white. Mick bought it to replace his lovely red roadgoing SWB quattro that he campiagned mainly on the Midland hills for a number of years.
Shortly after he bought it, engine went bang, followed by a couple of turbo failures and a brake failure that saw a scary ride after the finish line at Prescott, caused a bit of a mess. In true Mick 'Hooligan' Harriman style, the car was rebuilt properly and improved no end, and is now a really nice neat piece of kit. Mick does pedal it very well too
i believe it was a factory car or at least most of the bits are (kevlar roof, wings bonnet etc) rather than a dialynx conversion, although Mick would fill you in trackside at a Midland hillclimb with all the details im sure

Thanks - I have a good library of photographs taken at Shelsley and Loton over the past few years.
The Quattro is quite something when at "full chat", and Mick is a delightful bloke to talk to.
All round Petrolhead (excellent).
A short clip of his approach to Fallow Corner at Loton Park (not the best bit of film, but I wanted to catch the sound of the car).
Film taken with basic Canon DX digital camera:
Hope link works:

Previous post on Pistonheads from a few weeks ago:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... Down Hillclimb - Saturday
Car running in Class 11 Modified Limited Production Saloon Cars over 2000cc
Drivers were Tim Clarke and Andy Trayner
I will "get along" to a meeting where the car is and have a good nose about and ask a few questions.

offset the honking great engine hanging out in front of the front axle line. The Grp B Rally cars often had huge fuel tanks and ran them near full simply to aid the balance. A bit like the 911, it was a car that was developed into a competitive car eventhough dynamically it was all wrong. Look for any youtube footage of the swb in ireland, or Michelle Mouton driving anywhere, the swb quattro was a car that no driver really mastered, just some got better at hanging onto the rodeo ride than others!
i remember marvelling at the size of Mick H's red road car swb quattros brakes, they were massive!! At Loton Park where i would brake, off the gas and then re-accelerate, he couldnt as the turbo lag was too great, so kept the throttle wide open and reined the cars speed in by left foot braking, rather than succomb to the dreaded lag (measured on a calendar)

Also what are the radiators for at the back of the car that act as a rear spoiler?
Its a large oil cooler. Put there on the works cars to move weight rearwards and because there was very little room left in the engine bay for the size of oil cooler they wanted. On a road quattro the oil cooler is low on the right - a bit vunerable in a rally car.The late Tom Hammonds ex factory swb quattro pictured at Shelsley i reckon. The aero bits are based on replica Pikes Peak items but tweaked in MIRAs wind tunnel.
the car was in a musueum after Tom's passing, might still be.
i remember reading an article by Simon McBeath in the much missed CCC mag, that the car came with the semi auto box, but it shifted the clutch pedal automatically and Tom was worried he would have an ankle taken off by it such was its ferocity when shifting so changed to the more regular clutched rally 'box. Im sure theres an 80s vid on youtube of Walter Rohrl showing the auto shift box in action somewhere, maybe RAC Lombard, Manx or circuit of ireland? memmories a bit hazy on the old dickie davies grandstand coverage from when i was a kid lol
saw the TH car run a few times, a real daunting sight coming down towards Triangle bend full chat at Loton Park
