Can anyone advise me on what gear oil to use on a Hewland Mk9 box (4 spd)?

When I looked after race cars that use that 'box - many years ago! - we used ATF.
Changed often, every time we changed ratios, so very often!

Goggle hewland and the info should be on their website, you just need normal gear oil hypoid 90 I think, I use comma or any cheap stuff from a motor factors and change every ratio change, I have heard you can use engine oil if desperate!!

You should never use ATF. It has considerable friction properties that obviously aren't desirable in a manual gearbox.
Red Line do a quality light weight shockprrof gear oil.......or if on a budget, a std quality 70W-90 road car gear oil will cope with most applications.

I don't want to get into a internet shouty match but I posted in good faith.
We did use ATF because, as I remember it was a thin oil so there was less friction, we never had a problem with the gearbox cause by using ATF.

I have no doubt that 'proper' gear oil may make the 'box last longer etc.
But I don't know for sure that ATF will/would have shorten it's life.
To be fair I was talking about professional racing rather than club racing.

No problem Steve.smile
I have known Guys running ATF with no problems.
I was advised years ago, by William Hewland (clang), that it is a NO NO. So I have never done it......But if we all did what we were told, there would be no fun left..biglaugh

We have found that using Millers Oils new nano technology gear oil has given us greater longevity with our FGC gearbox. It might be worth a try?
