Arrive and Drive racing(is it worth it)

Has anyone done arrive and drive racing, been looking at max5 racing ltd and have e-mailed them for costs etc which they have given me (Thanks Jon), would like to hear from someone who's done this, like me on a low budget.
Costs I was given to compete in 3 races (Brands, Mallory and lydden) inc enrty fees, insurance, and their hire costs worked out to around £3k (plus cost to get licence, race wear etc).
This is the only way I can see to fulfill my dream of circuit racing (had some expierence in karts and Oval racing).

£1k/weekend for arrive & drive sounds *very* cheap - even if it's excluding VAT.
When you say includes insurance - presume there's still an excess?
entry fees will be about £300, say £50 fuel, £200 insurance and even a very basic contribution to running costs of £100 (tyres, brakes etc), plus a cost to transport of say £100 - would mean they're either not charging for the car or not charging for the support.
if the £3K includes VAT i simply cannot see how they can afford to offer that service. either way, if the car's not a complete and utter dog - bite their hand off. even if it *is* a shed, would be a good starting point before shelling out on a car yourself.

unless you are mechanically minded and can wield a set of spanners, there is very little difference in buying a car and paying for the occasional bit of support and these arrive n drive set ups.
if you look around at the people who you would be competing against, they are either wealthy and can afford for someone to do the work, or a mechanic/garage owner who can do the work themselves.
the advantage of doing it yourself is that its not all dead money, you could theoretically buy a cheap race car, spend time preparing it properly get some better results and sell it for more than you paid for it.
when you arrive and drive, you have nothing to show for it at the end apart from some fantastic memories!

i've done both with some good and some bad experiences, the main problem is that anyone any good with a decent car will not be cheap making arrive and drive only any good if you can afford it, if you're on a budget then it doens't work becuase whoever running you will not be making money, if they don't make money then they'll either have to cut corners or they simply won't have a product that has value that they can sell, either scenarios are any use.

If you decide to go down the arrive and drive route, look for one with a proven history and ideally some race/championship wins. Some competitors in a series I was involved with have now set themselves up as a provider of arrive and drive car hire (amongst other things), yet when they themselves were racing the cars they were poorly prepared, often had DNF's and were midfield at best. You definately do not get this impression from reading their website though.

Hi Mark, you can insure all mechanical equipment but excess is slightly dearer. Regarding dented wings etc, if it more cost effective to repair or replace and considerably cheaper than the excess then we would repair and just charge at cost price materials and labour, as the cars are new to race track they are all in pristine condition at the moment so any damage is repair immediately.
There are a couple of insurance companies around so you can get it cheaper, I have just given you worst case !
If you commit then we will endeavor to find a more cost effective solution for insurance, you can if you wish not insure the car however a £1500 bond will be required in advance of which we will hold and if any damage is done then this will pay towards it of if the vehicle is badly damaged then you will be liable for the total repair bill, inherently if any minor damage is done then it normally equates to approx £250 - £300.

All the cars are built to a very high standard and all set up the same.....

I'm hiring one of the cars that Roddo built, great bunch of guys and a great way to start racing. Mallory was my first race, will be doing at least another 6 races this season. Unfortunately can't make Cadwell due to prior commitments. Only my budget is constraing my racing!
