I’ve been doing a few sprints and hillclimbs in my road car (modified 2001 Audi S3) and, basically, I’m getting to the stage where I know it is not suitable for this.

Been looking a few different options to use for these events – all road registered and all relatively low powered. My budget and range is limited by my location (Australia) but I have identified the following:
1) Pug 205 GTi 1.9
2) Pug 306 GTi-6
3) Mid 90s Toyota MR2
4) Mazda MX5 (of course)
5) E30/e36 BMW 325i

All these would be stripped out, cage etc but still road legal.

I have a tame mechanic who is involved in this (WRX STi, his apprentice has a Mini Cooper JCW and his wife a 206 GTi) who is French so is obviously pushing me towards one of the first 2.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I would be doing more closed road sprints and hillclimbs so I am leaning towards 1, 2 or 4 personally.

Pick something where go-faster bits are readily available (says the man who uses a car based on mechanicals that have been out of production for almost 35 years). Given your location, surely the choice is between Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore hehe ?

My advice is don't buy anything until you have attended a few sprints at tracks you intend to race at. Chat to the drivers, see what they are driving, see how many cars there are in the classes you are interested in, see how competative the cars are.
