Hi, Long time reader, occasional poster here.
Planning to go circuit racing in 2010 so ive made a start on getting licenced.

Ive just recived my 'GO Motorsport' Pack and took the forms along to my GP.

He wants £100 to do my medical!

Is this correct? Ive been told preivously that its around £50 to get done. Is there anywhere else I could go? If thats what its gonna cost then so be it but it seems a little steep.

Thanks for your help guys

Apparently the fees are set by the BMA, so the Doc has an excuse to charge you that much. However they cant be binding because my Doctor usually looks up the recommended fee then says ‘That’s a bit steep, lets just call it £30, see you next year then’

As above, I only paid around £50/60 for my medical (but that was a good few years ago) but I know a fellow racer who was charged £100 for his medical this year

I presume you are over 55 and want the EKG or whatever it is as well.
I was with my doctor for 5 minutes and he felt guilty about charging me for so little time.

There is no set fee, it's up to each doctor to set his own fee. Lots of GPs don't know anything about MSA medicals or the forms (I've never done one and hadn't seen the form till I got my own race licence) and therefore charge as they would for an HGV/PSV licence etc. which is actually much more involved and time consuming. Most doctors these days are also pretty snowed under and can frankly do without the additional work so price it accordingly. Sometimes you can negotiate by showing/sending the form to the doc to demonstrate its brevity.

I'm happy to do a deal for a PHer but you'd need to travel to Swansea. Or come to Silverstone weekend after next (Birkett testing/race 23/24th) wink

My medical was £113.50 (yes I remember exact figure!)

That was for 10 minutes, I questioned them about the price and they said they had to go with the next nearest medical rate, which happens to be for HGV licences.

Think mine was £70 they checked the questions out and said it was more or less a taxi medical, so they just charged that price, the hgv one was more but luckely for me it was a simple one smile

I might be wrong but...

Isn't there usually a doctor at the Autosport show that charge a 'set fee' purely for your MSA Licence?

I understand that Teesside Autodrome at Middlesbrough will be carrying out ARDS Licence courses, together with a medical examination on site, for an all inclusive price of £325, making the medical cost about £50. The big advantage is that it saves time in not having to make a special visit to your normal Doctor.

Hope this helps

Craig

I paid £30 as the receptionist at my GP surgery thought it was ridiculous to charge 70-odd quid for a 5 minute chat and a dip-stick-in-piss "test" (for diabetes).

I think the rate was for something along time lines of "fitness for sport with no physical examination" (can't remember the exact wording).

Now that's out of the way, I won't need another medical unless I want an international licence IIRC.

I wish mine was £30, Think I paid £80 4 or 5 years ago.

But a physical examination is required, albeit fairly brief - heart, blood pressure, vision, visual fields, colour vision.

I agree anything more than about £50 seems excessive even to me but try getting any other professional (solicitor etc.) to give up 10-15 minutes of his time and put his name to a form for that much wink

Thanks for all the replys sounds like its about the right kind of money. I could just book it and see how long it takes and then see if they can do anything with the price. I am 31 so dont need the over 50/55 extras done, just the standard thing.

Dr Bob, who much would you do it for if i was to come and see you? You are about 2 hours away from me tho and I cant make it to Silverstone next weekend.

Im at Snett this weekend to have a look at the CSCC

Mine was free! When I called up to make the appointment, I didn't say it was for a medical. I just arrived in the doctor's room with the form, asked him to sign it. He did his checks - limbs, eyes etc signed it and off I went...

Good point. OP - you do realise that the 2009 licence will expire on 31st December 2009, right? And you'll have to fork out the renewal fees to get the 2010 one pretty much straight after your 2009 turns up in the post...

I wont be applying just yet. The medical report remains valid for a few months.
