Who said old Beetles can't handle?
Discussion
I'm racing mine in the HSCC Historic Racing Saloons...(on crossplies) and it's a hoot!
Can't believe I'm the first one to do it. Bit slow on the straights, so the handling ended up being the only weapon I had left and it was great! Less weight and more power coming next season.

Quite enjoying the Dunlop L's at the moment...quite slidy, but I must admit I'd like to see what the car can do on 'proper' tyres. I'm going to push the car a bit harder next season.
I'm a newbie to circuits (ex Drag Racer), so this year was all about staying on the track and getting some miles under my belt. People say 'you only learn by going off'....not sure about that one!

You can run on Dunlop L or Ms in CSCC "Swinging Sixties" if you want, too. There's a seperate class for cars so shod.

Unfortunately my steel cooling fan exploded at 12,000rpm through Clearways at the last round and decapitated the motor, so that me done for the season.
I'm guessing looking at your regs that modifications are pretty free. I've got vented discs all round etc etc.
Sorry to hear about the mechanical maladies.I'm guessing looking at your regs that modifications are pretty free. I've got vented discs all round etc etc.
Yes, CSCC regs do allow modifications as long its on the original engine & induction type, original construction method (ie not a space frame when it was contructed with a metal body shell) & other mods that can be fitted beneath the standard size & shape shell.
There's another thread about racing a Beetle here, where I have expanded on this a bit: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Thanks for the offer Andy. Budget restrictions are probably going to limit me to running only the HSCC Championship next year (as the car was built specifically to run with the HRSR cars), but what I would like to do is enter a couple of rounds on grippy tyres 'just for fun' so you never know!
There are a cuople of original shape beetles that race in the BARC SE Tin Tops and they have a class of there own. I can pass you details if you fancy getting touch with them about doing a round. We are out on the Silverstone GP Circuit on Sunday for 2 X 15 minute races. The regs are very open so you would be able to run in your current spec.

I have no doubt that you would be a very welcome addition to the grid, even on an occasional basis. As its not a Championship plenty of people race in just a few events rather than having to chase points! Remember that the CSCC also gets an invite to a 1 hour race at Spa in July each year and also to a 300Km race at the Nurburgring as well. However, in order to be eligible to enter you must have raced at least twice with the club beforehand. Annual subs are £35 and series registration is £95, I think, or at least it was for this year.Hi,
I was due to race with the Beetles in the BARC SE Tin Tops at the next round at Brands (but my engine went pop and put an end to it) This is one of the 'fun' races that I'd planned to have a stab at next year.
Andy,
I've made a note of the Classic Sports Car Club website and I'll see how things go (financially) next spring.
Cheers

Why does every thread have to turn into an advertisement for the CSCC?
Sorry! I should make it clear that, of course, other series are also available!!!!! Others are equally able to promote their series on here!!!! Not my fault that they don't.Edited by SimonY on Tuesday 29th September 10:08
