Was anybody else out competing in the apocalyptic rain/hail/thunder & lightning we experienced at Curborough on Sunday? Really glad I was in a closed Mini Cooper, the single seaters and Westerfields didn't look like much fun. I've never known conditions like it before in 25 odd years of attending motorsport events.

Well done to all the marshals and officials of the Owen Motor Club who kept the event going. It cleared up in the afternoon so the final runs could almost be said to be dry, so we could look back and enjoy the Dunkirk spirit of the morning, sharing gazeboes and flasks of tea....

YES!! The british sprint round at Pembrey was sodden aswell! Must have ben close to geting called off on the saturday. Lots of standing water at the two fastest parts of the track, aquaplaneing at 150+ is no fun! Everyone was well behaved though and thanfuly there was no major accidents due to the weather.

Still a great event though, dryed nicely for a couple of fast runs on sunday afternoon, so there was something to make the long drive south worthwhile, only to return to wales this weekend for anglesey.Anyone from here going?

By coincidence my in laws were caravanning at Pembrey Countryside Park at the same time. I know what I would prefer to be doing in the wet...

Sounds like you had the same sort of experience as Curborough. Silly wet in the morning and fun in the afternoon.

I know that by definition motorsport venues have their own micro climate that exacerbate whatever the prevailing conditions are at the time but last weekend was surreal.

wavey I was at curborough and yes it was very wet and slippy , and led me to being to cautious on my final run when it was actualy pretty dry. But ah well , it was good fun still and well done to the marshalls for braving it outside!

I was in the white 106.. found out that it leaks quite badly at the weekend too! Hope the mini behaved it self in the wet.

I'm racing at Pembrey this weekend - forecast isn't great but hoping it stays a little bit dry at least as I'm in an open car and camping! Cross your fingers smilesmile

Yes, the Mini was great - my first go in it. I found that visibility was the worst thing to contend with, with no heater to demist and just a single wiper it was getting difficult to see where you were going. Water was coming in through where the gear linkage goes out and steam off the exhaust filled the cockpit going round the top hairpin. Quite a lot of drama to fit into a 44 second run round The Curburgring really...

It belongs to the chap I was sharing it with and was pleased to be able to peg my all times to within a second and a bit of his as they came down during the day. The Gilbern pipped me by a tenth though dammit.

I don't know whether to admit this but...

I was the plonker that stuffed his elise at the hairpin on the first timed run.

Can't believe I made it through the biblical conditions of the morning only to bin it once it had stopped raining! Haven't found out how much the repairs are going to be yet but I'm sure they will serve as a permanent reminder not to be such a muppet in future...

Hope the damages were minimal! Anyone at prescott on the 23rd?

Have to say that was quite an achievement. Never seen anybody go off there before. That tow behind the recovery truck down the straight must have felt like an eternity! Hope the repairs don't come in too painful.

I think the Mini and its owner will be at Prescott next week, but my next play is at the Shelsley Walsh Classic meet on the 19th July in step-dad's Alfa Guilia.

What do people in open cars tend to do about getting to/from events?

I plan to drive my new toy (not bought anything yet, but it'll be open and probably a Caterfield) to and from events and I noticed many people have nice, warm 4X4s to shelter and trailers to get the car there!

they get very wet biggrin

and then get fed up of being soggy so buy a trailer and 4x4...

sorry couldnt resist, but is true of a couple of my mates. one, an ex biker, suggested at least he didnt have to 'bail out' his bikes even though he got just as wet as his 7type!

I'm in the HSA championship ( my first year) , its got a quite a good calender , Loton parks probably my favourite sprint/hillclimb so far.

But i enter other events aswell outside the championship, back to curborough on the 12th july.

Unfortunately, I'm not in any championship as I only do shared events in friends/relatives cars. However, only today I've had an offer for one of my Volvos (3 small kids, nuff said) which means I can get a Mk2 Golf GTI and can soon be self sufficient in the sprinting/hillclimb stakes. To be honest funds and time would only allow for 3-4 events a year anyway so a championship is not really worth it but I'm in the MAC and Shelsley Walsh is only a stones throw away so I'd be doing those sort of events.

I have competed in the Curborough Sprint Championship a number of years including this year. The thing to watch when choosing a championship is that you are going to get some competition in your class.

In previous years in my Evo 6 (Class 1C) and my Dax Rush (2B) there were good entries and competition,` also you have the possibility of scoring maximum points.

This year however in my Nissan GT-R things are not so good. Not only are entries down but they, and most other motor clubs have put 4WD cars into a class of their own (1D) This has meant I have noone to directly compete with, and no chance of scoring any points. frown

So choose your car / champinship carefully.smile

Rich-GT,
Are there any other Formula Fords there? Class 5 iirc.

I would be sharing a car with a mate so I wouldn't be totally alone in that class.
