So, posting videos of our races on Youtube/etc
Discussion
Right, everyone does it- there are videos posted here, there and everywhere...
But, drivers with video devices are asked to sign a piece of paper saying they won't publish them anywhere, including on the Internet.
Sometimes a piece of paper may not need to be signed - on the express agreement that the videos still won't end up posted on the Internet.
So I have a question or five...
Does noone care or what?
Are you paying for the privilege of being able to post your video?
Why do I own my own photos (and can sell/print or do whatever with them), but not my videos!?!
What obvious thing am I missing that makes all this ok - or is it just ok anyway...?
I was under the impression that the restrictions they place on you are for "commercial/profiteering purposes". i.e. if you sold it to a crashes compilation production company you would be in breach.
Or am I missing something here?? That is always the way I took it to mean.
TBH, the main reason I like to publish them is so I don't have to send mates DVDs etc. And also so I have a backup if all goes tits up on my pc.

I phoned up MSV and asked who to would be best to talk to. Cant remember the guys name now but he emailed me giving permission so it was in writing.
If you get chance to dig the email out could you post up the guy's address? Then about 14 million PH'ers can all request permission! As we all know, before you record footage (even for private use) you need to get a camera form from the circuit and hand it in at sign-on on the race/test day.
Plus, as Ben states above, before posting footage on the web you need to call the circuit (or owning company, e.g. MSV) and ask their permission before posting, otherwise you're messing with quite a large potential fine!! Generally, for the circuits that I've spoken to, they don't mind so long as your footage doesn't show a bad accident or something. Some circuits (e.g. Castle Combe) like to know which website you're posting onto as well.
Mail me if anyone's interested in new camera gear by the way. Am I allowed to say that? Sorry if not

Just to add to the words of warning being posted but if your championship is being covered on TV you might just want to check with the Championship Coordinator that this will be okay as well.
You might well find that the circuit and the scrutiniers(sp?) aren’t the only people who need to approve it first and the higher up the ladder you are the more likely it could be an issue.

I'm about to start racing again and I've had my "post your vids and give us 25lrage" letter from MSV. Did anyone ever get the name of the person to speak to at MSV to get it ok'd?
I can't remember the name of the person that I spoke to, but it only took a few phone calls to get the right person and they didn't mind me posting it. Do call first though. I've had a bit of footage up on You Tube for a while with my name against it and sure enough, nobody's ever asked me for £25,000 My understanding is as has been said its not used for commercial purposes when posted on net just a place to park it to show friends and admirers or anyone thats interested. I think this must be the case because how would they handle spectators posting up video. At the end of the day it can do nothing but good for the circuits anyhow as it gives people contemplating the sport an insight what its like to be in the racing seat.
