Chaps,

As title really......

i'm starting my racing 'career' and it's all very exciting.

Competing in Northern Sports and Saloon Cars.

I've got my ARDs done, bought a fiesta, but now i need to get my helmet and suit sorted.

I'm in the NE, and wonder if any there's anywhere nearby to get the kit without resorting to the internet, or driving to North Wales (demon Tweeks) or Silverstone where i understand there's a place.

Is there anywhere nearby? Even somewhere near cadwell, donington etc would be better.

All advice gratefully received. Many thanks.

Hello mate,

Motoscope in Northallerton (www.motoscope.co.uk, 01609 780155) normally has some stuff in, but nowhere near as much as Thieves etc. Personally I'd just drive over to Wrexham and suck it up - if not then get overalls etc from Motoscope and order your helmet from Demon Thieves; they do a free mail return service on bone domes if they don't fit.

Are you going to be out on May 16/17th? I used to run a 205GTi in Class D but have now moved on to Class F in a Locoblade... Give me a shout if you want any tips, a natter over a brew etc (I live 10mins from Croft).

What might be of use is this site:

Theres some good stuff there about race weekends etc. If you are out in a fortnight then feel free to come park next to us (RAF Motorsports Association) in the paddock as some of our guys will be out in your race and can make sure you don't get too far behind the drag curve!

Regards,

Frodo

I'm recommend going somewhere with a large variety of brands. For instance, Arai helmets fit me perfectly, but Bell helmets don't. Similarly, Alpinestars race suits fit me perfectly but Sparco and OMP don't. Boots are the worst - I've just been through six pairs to find some that fit me (if you're a size 9, get in touch, I have some brand new Momo ones I've got stuck with). It's the same with all my kit really - I've been through different makes to find what suits me best.

There's nothing worse than being distracted by a poorly fitted suit, boots or gloves when you're racing, and of course in the case of a helmet it must fit your perfectly to be safe.

You'll be spending over a grand to get the stuff, so look at the cost of petrol to get to somewhere decent and it'll probably be worth it. Good stuff lasts a long time.

Thanks all. Some sound advice there.

I'll see what i can do at Motoscope, but demon thieves will probably get some business too. I'm kind of running out of time so the mail order isn't looking attractive, a long drive to Wrexham it'll probably be.

Frodo, Yes I'm there for the first race at croft, so will try to find you. We've got white Mk3 XR2i with no stickers so it should stand out. Certainly any tips over a brew would be appreciated. I'll keep my eyes open for the flying club!

I'll be heading to the DDMC meeting next friday too if you're there. Need to make sure my registration is correct!

Thanks again all. Steve

Thats what I'd recommend - go to Thieves, take Percy Plastic and be prepared to spend a bit! Make sure you get a Snell SA2005 helmet as you'll only be able to use an SA2000 for the rest of this year...

I won't be at the DDMC meeting but will be at the track - look for lots of RAF roundels and our big 'sail' flags. Have you bought your car pre-built or built it yourself? If the latter, try to get someone to scrutineer it beforehand as there is nothing worse than failing because of something silly... Make sure you check all the lights, T-Pulls, master switches, fire extinguisher cables, rain light etc etc two or three times! If you want someone to cast an eye over beforehand then give me (or one of the DDMC chaps) a shout to come over - might cost you a brew but will be worth it.

When it comes to Croft, latch on to someone in your class and follow them - it is very easy to lose track of time on your first weekend! Take a mate or your missus and get them to clock-watch... Be there five minutes before rather than the opposite! And remember to enjoy it - you're just about to start the best hobby in the world, prepare to get addicted!

Oh, forgot to mention... Every club in the world seems to have the Demon Tweeks 10% discount - make sure you have it and use it as you'll certainly be spending over £500! That'll pay for the petrol.

Motoscope is very good for general car stuff such as silicon hoses, T pulls, master switches; basically anything for the car that you can't sort within the next fortnight. Dan and Richard are great and offer advice freely!

If you want to chat further then drop me an email at si_frowen (at) yahoo dot co dot uk - I'll give you my phone number.

Regards,

Frodo
