I'm doing my first race next weekend and am interested in at least getting my licence on it's way to National A. I'm aware I need to 'wear' a novice badge on the back of the car (got this already) but to get my 6 signatures... who do I get to sign something, and what do they sign?!

Thanks very much.

In your blue book you will find a licence up-grade card. You will need to tear this out and fill in your details.

This card needs to be handed in to the officials when you sign on the morning of the race.
PS. make sure you have remembered to put a passport picture on the up grade card, otherwise they wont be able to sign it,

"Untruth" Welcome to the world of racing.

You can gain a signature by doing a days marshalling as well. Also, remember for the majority of club championships, if not all, you only need a National B so getting a National A is only lining the pockets of the MSA as this licence costs more. I have been through the glory of holding a National A and realised it was a waste of money so National B I am.

Good luck with your first race.

Thanks, National A is just so I can do international at some point. I am like you aware of the MSA's 'interesting' pricing structure, I am at the mercy of them there!

It's Rich isn't it?

You need your details filled in, and must have the photo attached (I ended up aralditing mine on last minute).

If I've got the right person and you're going to be at Donny on Sat, then also the MGCC always made comments to me as I didn't fill in the race details when handing it in, so I started to do that and it seemed to make their day each time! I guess if they've got to write out race details on several cards it wouldn't be the most fun for them. No other race organiser seemed to expect this, and in fact commented that they were surprised I'd done it.

Jason

ETA - try not to forget it before you go, it can take a few hours for the card to find its way back to the race admin who you can collect it from. It's better now as with the address they can post it on.

Jason,
It is indeed! Thanks for the help, I have some spare photos at home so this should almost be quite fluid!

As MGRacer has already said, you can get a signature for a day's marshalling. I'd recommend it - every driver I've had on post with me has commented on how much they have learnt.

also - a little known MSA requirement is that you must have the same year's upgrade card as the year the race is in; its no use turning up in Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr of 2010 with a 2009 upgrade card as they won't sign it....

(god knows why....even the people I spoke to who signed my card last had no idea why and agreed it was a lame rule).

You can still mix years to get your license upgrade; just each race has to be on the upgrade card for the year that race was in.

Amen.

I should know this, but is that one only, of the six required for upgrade?

I'm interested in this, and am just down the road from Snetterton - who do I contact to make it happen? Also, do I need to supply my own orange overalls (sorry, just being practical).

Yes, the Marshall thing is one point of the 6. When you do Marshalling, IIRC, you get given an orange suit. I'm thinking of doing a Marshalling day at Thruxton or Brands myself.

I wen racing at the weekend and did a double header, which much to my pleasant surprise, meant I got TWO stamps. ACE!

Decide which meeting you want to marshal at & then contact the chief marshal of the organising club - if you don't know who that is, or can't find contact details, just ask on here & somebody will sort you out! Let it be known that you're a driver seeking an upgrade signature, as arrangements will have to be made for a competent person to sign your card - I'm not sure, but I assume it will have to be one of the Clerks.

Depending on the club/circuit, you may be able to borrow orange overalls, but they're not really necessary - just make sure you don't wear anything that will clash with the flags! You'll need decent boots & waterproof gear (especially at Snet!) & foord, drink, etc., for a long day.
