Good stuff. Looks like your tyres went away after about 15-16minutes, and I'd say that you are turning in too early at the Bombhole, which is compromising your run into Coram.

Try a little higher pressure in the tyres, a pound or two. They will take a little longer to come to temp, but will stay better for bit longer.

I thought you would reduce the pressure if that was the case. At least that's what we do in karting.

But anyway it certainly looked fun, and I agree with thunderbelmont you were turning in quite early, and a fair few other errors but I'll let you off, it is your first race after all smile.

Thanks chaps.

Yes I do suffer from TITS (Turn In Too Soon smile) It's one of the things that I hope racing will iron out so I can enjoy track days a bit more. I can't seem to wait that extra few metres for fear of running out of track - but I know I am causing more of an issue turning in too soon when it comes to the exit speed. frown

There's always the next race....then the next....

Yeah - tyre pressures - now there's a can 'o worms for the novice racer. You're right from about 15 mins in the tyres suddenly went all wobbly and the drifts longer in duration. Hummm....

Looks to me like you did a great job for your first race. Kept it on the island, didn't spin, passed a few and didn't come last. Cracking result! The speed will come.

Looked like fantastic fun, loved the overtaking move on the blue car around the outside at Sear. I was going to say one of the cars in front was braking later than you for the Esses but he then promptly went off so maybe he was braking too late! MR2s look really good, lots of cars on the grid and all closely matched too.

If you drop the pressures, the tyre will heat quicker, which also means that it will go off sooner. If you want them to work better later in the race, increase the pressure by a pound or so. That's what we did in ASCAR, and they do in NASCAR.

Excellent. Well done. And one race is 100% more then I've ever done.

It looks like fun, so i;ll look out for it- do you visit mallory or donington?

The MR2 Championship will be visiting Donington on Saturday September 19th and Mallory on Sunday October 11th. You can view the whole calender here: http://www.mr2championship.com/calendar.htm

Ok I can understand less air to heat up etc. However with increasing the pressure, would it not effect the shape of the tyre, especially seeing as temperature and pressure are directly proportional. So is it as important as to how the tyre behaves, rather than just keeping it in the temperature range? Although I guess that would only matter if you were using extreme differences in pressure, and as it is fine tuning you would only be using subtle changes. Although then you could take into account that with the tyre heating up less, then the tyre pressure would remain at a similar pressure as if you didn't bother.

Anyway I'm just thinking aloud, afterall kart races are only 10 minute sprints. I may have a go in a longer test outing.

Probably better off investing in a tyre heat tester thingy and then setting all the pressures to be the same when hot, doing this in my Golf meant starting with cold pressures that would otherwise have seemed very odd. You can then also set the front camber (assuming its adjustable) to get the temperature spread acros the tyre width best you can.

What kind of laptimes were you doing around Snetterton?

Interesting. As a novice-novice (if there is such a thing) I have no clue on car set up and tyre pressures (always just took the Ult to the factory recomended pressures).

I was 1.01 secs off the fastest lap. With the car out of the box. 1.25.74secs Ney bad?

Camera is a Panasonic SDR-SW20 with a roll cage bracket. I used Vimeo.com as it give upto 500Mb and unlimited time - with 18mins+ races this is an advantage over You Tube.

Very pleased with the results.

My quickest lap around Snetterton is 1.29.1, albeit in a 1600cc classic hatchback. If you've only got 1 second to find I'd definitely go down the camber and tyre pressure route. And just lose whatever weight you can. In the Golf, I changed the door mirrors from remote control versions to ones you had to wind the windows down to move. The latter were 1.5g lighter each. Gulp.

So if you're not already on a minimum weight, I'd have all the sound deadening out and get the kitchen scales out for a good old session of losing crap you don't need. Being a tight geordie git I did this to the nth degree as its also the one performance enhancement that doesn't cost any money.

I'm really where I need to be for weight. I was 1210 after the first race (minimun 1200) with over half a tank of fuel.

I'm going on a test day at Brands the day before the next race. What does one 'test' there?

It's a shame you guys are not racing at my local circuit, Oulton Park, but that racing looked like so much fun I think I'll toddle down to Donny to have a watch at first hand.

p.s. to get the link above to work, remove the dot after htm to see the calendar.

Oulton's a popular circuit so we get to race there in rotation. Last year we had a single header, this year we're not there at all but I think next year we get a double header. driving
