Mid-engined single seater

Hi All,

I have a Van Diemen RF87 single seater (equivalent to a FF but transverse mounted CVH lump)

I have very limited engineering skills, but i have brought the car as a project, the plan is to rebuild and drop in a bike lump (busa, b'bird, R1 etc) to have a laugh with, Hillclimbs, sprints, track days etc.....

I am at the planning stage, and am trying to figure out the best way to go. do i go chain-driven LSD or prop and diff, if so, who sells the kits?

i have been told that a busa lump is best, does everyone concur?

I have also been told that dry sumping is not necessarily the only option for oil management, there is a kit that implements a weighted oil scavenge apparatus that apparently works well.

In short, general comments and advise, links etc would be MASSIVELY appreciated.

You mean "Formula First", right? I don't remember them being called RF87 but might be wrong.

very good most people have no idea about formula first. But yes, you are correct. It is the later, 'facelifted' model that i have smoothed with fibreglass to make look a bit more contemporary. RF87 is in reference to the chassis code and year of manufacture. it was car #26

Hi Greg,
A busa is by far the most popular engine but we ran an OMS with a tuned Blackbird for a couple of seasons and it was competitive. It's really a case of your budget and plans for the car. Personally I wouldn't spend too much money on the car as you're going to be in the 1600 single seater class with a 20 year old chassis and no aero. So if I was you I'd:

1. Get a chain driven LSD from quaife (they pop up on flea bay from time to time), you'll need drive shafts etc etc
2. Buy a 1300 busa engine from a breakers and get a power commander so you can remap it.
3. Fabricate a cage for the engine
4. Buy some decent rims and get some slicks
