Sprinting / Hill Climbing - Advice Needed

I'm looking to do some sprinting and / or hill climbing at some point in the near future and would just like some advice of how to go about it?

I gather you need a National B Speed Competition Licence, however I hold an ARDS National B Race licence, so I assume I'm good to go on that front, with no need for the Speed Competition Licence?

Does anyone know of any clubs around the Essex area which are good? I don't mind traveling, but one based nearby would obviously be handy!

I'll be using a Renault Mégane R26.R, which I would have thought is reasonably well suited to this kind of thing as it comes, although I guess I'd need a second set of wheels with more normal tyres, because I wouldn't have thought Toyo R888s would be allowed, would they? Would a car like this be competitive, or would I need a 500bhp Evo?

There are lots of clubs active in that area. Your blue book will list them, or just get in touch with Borough 19 Car Club (one of the biggest and most active in the area).

There are classes for everything from a bog standard 1.0 shopping trolley up to single seaters with 1000 bhp per ton but the further you are from standard the tougher you'll find the competition lined up against you. To get started, the closer you are to standard the better. This includes the tyres and if possible you want to stick with list 1A rubber. The B19 guys will show you the tech regs for their events, which will be similar to the others around the country.

Borough 19 normally run a "shake-down" event a week or two before the formal start of the season, under MSA rules, but without any trophies, points or WHY, so that's a good one to try to see how you're going to like it/get on/etc.

Hi, you're also well placed for the TWMC All Circuit sprint championship, mostly based at Lydden and Brands with a couple of rounds at Goodwood.

I'd expect the Renault to be very well suited though I'm not sure on the tyre regs for the road going class. Your class was won by a Pug 306 from a Honda S2000 this year FYI.

Toyo R888's will put you in a modified production class which unless you have alot of power you will not be competitive. Probably best to stay on standard rubber ie 1A tyres and run in a standard class say B2 if you are up to 2 litre.

if you go on the borough 19 web site and open up the regs for any of last years sprints you can see the classes that you can enter.

runnning anoything bar 1A tyres in a standard car isnt worth the hassle, you will be up against fully modified cars trailered to events and will get comprehensively beaten. stick to 1A and enjoy a few close battles.

the R26R has a turbo so will be counted as a 2.6 given the forced induction rules. a guy has been sprinting an identical car in the soth west championship this year with good results.
the class was Class A4 – Series Production Road Cars over 2600cc
this was a list of cars in the class (in final results order, with times!) at castle combe in june 2008, a mixed bag you could say!....
