Guys what are the rules on the hans device. Do I have to have one at club level or are they optional?

I been away from racing since 2002

one of these:

whist they are a life saver, they are absolutly no use unless the rest of your setup is 100% compatable and setup right, ie. if the seat is not designed to accomodate a HANS, then your neck will be in the wrong place to start with etc.

Please Please get one of these, this possibly helped my husband to survive Saturday's crash. They are quite expensive however you can not put a price on a life.

Thanks for that advice Sara. Although I only race a relativly low powered TVR Tasmin in the TVR Challenge and having already had quite a heavy "off" this year, for next season I will be definately be investing in the full Hans set up. I'll be definately binning my Sparco neck brace although I'm sure that I would have been in a bad way without it!!

Dot and I wish Andy a speedy recovery and you and the littluns' Gods strength!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys. I bought an arai GP5 with no hans posts about 2 years ago. I've only used it twice, but i really would like a hans device. Looks like i know what i will be buying next. Can i have the posts fitted or do i need a new lid?

Lew

Hmmm, you used to be able to get the Hans posts fitted retrospectively but I went to Demon Tweeks last week to buy a new lid and was told that they could only be manufacturer fitted now. Worth checking with the MSA or the helemt manufacturers I would think.

99% certain retro fitting has either been banned or that it can only be done by the manufacturer.

Bought my skid lid at the start of the year and had it with the posts fitted, even though I only plan on doing track days for the moment i have the choice at least.

As for should you buy a HANS divice? yes

I race Caterhams, and had my car set up for Hans at the start of this year. I had my Arai GP5K helmet retro fitted with posts - sent it off to Demon Tweeks and they sorted it for me - it comes back with the FIA stickers on - think the posts cost about £85 fitted. Couldn't not get a HANS - it only takes one big off, but touch wood, haven't hit anything too solid so far!.....it amounted to about 10% of my racing costs for the year and it's a one off cost.

The rules associated with the fitting of HANS clips to helmets has changed over the last 12 months. There are 2 approval ratings, one is for HANS clips to be fitted to FIA approved levels and the other is HANS clips fitted by an authorised fitting centre. At the moment the MSA only check the latter but this could change in the next couple of years. We would recommend getting any HANS clips fitment to FIA approved levels.

For HANS clipping to be retro fitted to FIA standard, this must be carried out by the manufacurer or a manufacturer authorised fitting centre. Sparco have authorised GPR to be FIA authorised HANS clips fitters but other helmet makes will have to be sent off to the manufacurer or 3rd party in Europe. This includes Arai. All old helmets must meet Snell SA2005 standards and be pre-drilled to accept the clips.

I hope this answers a few questions, if you have any more please e-mail me at rob@gprdirect.com or look at our new and improved website www.gprdirect.com where we even have videos of HANS devices in action.

Rob - you guys retro fitted HANS posts to the Arai helmet I bought from you in 2003/4. You didn't apply a sticker because they didn't exist/weren't required at the time. Is this going to cause me issues in future - I have had the odd scrute comment on the lack of them. If I drop in on Friday with my helmet can you furnish it with whatever stickering it needs?

Cheers

Hi Andy,

The FIA sticker cannot be applied to this helmet as if you purchased it in 2003/4 this would be a Snell SA2000 helmet. If we clipped the helmet we would have placed a separate non-FIA but MSA sticker underneath the lining. The MSA Scrutineer should find this sticker when looking for the Snell sticker. There will only be a problem if you race in a championship that requires the FIA approved sticker. This should be specified in the supplimentary regulations.

I hope that helps.

Thanks Rob. Have not noticed a sticker under the lining, but then I've not looked for it. Will have a look and if not there will pay you guys a visit when I'm testing on Friday.

Cheers

On the subject of Hans Devices. I swapped my tethers for the new "vision advantage" ones last week and it makes a big difference being able to turn your head left and right. It was particularly handy when filtering into the pit lane from the refuelling lane during the 24hour as otherwise my peripheral vision would have been extremely limited.

If you are buying new, I would ask for the supplier to sell you one with the new tethers if possible.

So What we are saying is i shouldnt get dad to drill it and and put bolt through from the inside.... joke!

I looked at my lid today and despite its little use, there is foam coming through the lining on the bottom. So i will buy a new lid and hans device. The question is, Should i be upset about the arai falling to pieces or just accept thats what they do?

I had that happen to my Arai after a couple of years - sent it back to them and they replaced all the lining and straps. Took less than 72 hours from me sending it off to it being back on my doorstep - and best of all, it was all free of charge, covered under Arai's lifetime warranty.
