Hi, I want to go racing next year in the BMWRDC Kumho championship with a friend sharing an M3 E36. I used to race bikes a couple of years ago and I have an Arai RX7 bike helmet (top of the range bike racing helmet) and wondered if I can use it in a car because I had the lining/cheek pads etc changed for a perfect fit, and the lining is removable, so the interior never gets unpleasant. I have never worn a more comfy helmet, so would they let me use it????

Unlikely that you can use it, does it have a fire retardant lining?

From the 2008 MSA "Blue Book", helmets must comform to one of these standards for car racing:

• FIA 8860-2004
• SNELL SA2005
• SNELL SA2000
• SFI Foundation 31.1A, 31.2A
• BS 6658 Type A/FR
• BS 6658 – 85 Type A (Type ‘B’ is not acceptable)

Somewhere your helmet will have a label stating the standards to which it conforms. If its one of the above then you're in luck but sadly its unlikely as car helmets require a flame resistant lining whereas bike helmets don't.

They don't, you only need a fire retardant lining for FIA events.

Type A bike helmet is fine for MSA events.

Not ok for 2009 or if I am wrong 2010. Check with the MSA.
