you might need to apply for your first licence within a year from taking the ards, but you dont actaully have to race in that year.
I did my ards in 2000, got my first nat B licence and didnt race in 2000.
I then renewed my licence in 2001 and carried on from there..
once you have a licence I think it can lapse a year before it downgrades...
once you hit 45 or have an international C you need a medical every year...

As I said. once you've got the licence ( which you need the ards pass certificate to get) then you can just renew each year... Not sure how long the actual ards pass is valid for, fairly sure you need to turn it into a licence within 12 months, although this is just a paper exercise involving a few pound notes
SO in summary... do your ards NOW... use it to get your NAT B Licence, and then just keep renewing the licence every year.. It is worth noting mind that the licence runs from jan to dec every year.
so depending how long the ards is valid for you may be able to take the test now, and apply or your licence in the new year, and go racing that year..
easiest is to give the msa a bell (www.msauk.org) and im sure they can confirm everything
