Get down to Brands for a track day and book some time with one of their instructors.
I recommend Will Arif - a very good instructor.

Silverstone do one to one tuition. Check out their website. It's about £275 an hour in one of their Exiges I think.

Cool. Let us know how it goes. I should add that my post wasn't a recommendation, I just know that they do 1-1 tuition there.

It's about £275 an hour - You are kidding right?!

The ards is just to show you are Safe (not that you are fast), if you are save and have very basic knowledge of where to place the car and know the flags, this sound a bit excessive! Not many fail the ARD's (if you do it is a clear message, like not passing your driving test first time!;)).

Yes, passing the ARDS is quite easy (although I hear Silverstone are pretty tough; I did mine at Brands Hatch), but it's a good idea to get some instruction before you race, especially if you don't have much track experience.

Incidentally, I'd also recommend a test day before embarking on your first race. It gets one used to turning up early, unloading the car, signing on and last but not least, driving with other people on track.

Thanks for the input. I am doing the test at Silverstone so think it makes sense to do the training there. As for the money my work is paying for it.

My new job is UK MD of a sports car manufacturer and I felt it was important that I could drive there cars with the professionalism required! I can't say who the company is until we do our press release next week.

Sounds like a great job smile You might be interested in a longer 1-1 course with someone like Mark Hales too. There's a little piece at the back of EVO this month in "Fast Fleet" on him, and he's highly respected. Alternatives are things like Andy Walsh's "CarLimits" course etc.

Do let us know next week which company it is, you've got me guessing smile

Best of luck in your new job beer

No problem at all. A drive would be nice! smile If you look at my profile you'll notice I've got a bit of a thing for British sports cars! smile

I can also vouch for Simon Mason's abilities. I haven't had any training from him, but people that I race with have and rate him highly. There is a standard course for high performance road driving, called HPC - I believe EVO have put a few of their new journos through it. I think if I was in charge of a sports car manufacturer I would want all my sales staff and a few others to attend a course such as that. I'm a training management consultant, and I negotiate corporate discounts on courses all the time; you'd be surprised what you can get and the tailoring and benefits you achieve by doing things that way.

Best of luck smile

Another shout for Simon Mason from me. An instructor who takes his coaching very seriously and is not just another driver trying to scrape a living from instructing between drives.

I confess I have sat with a few instructors who I've considered (and I do this for a living!) to be pretty useless. Lovely people, but no idea how to coach people properly. Most of the dialogue amounted to "yes, good. good. good. Turn in a bit later next time. good. good." rofl
