General lack of Impressive Helmets in Club MS

What is it with Club Motorsport - we spend alot on our cars but do not go the final yard and get a Funky Helmet.

We need to get the sad state of affairs sorted;)

I've often wondered that, think its because its so expensive to get decent paint jobs done. I spent ages searching the internet for ready done paint jobs a while back and eventually found some but they wern't that good to be honest! Still I like the lid in the photos!!

If a helmet cost 500 quid and it cost for instance 300(dont know the cost of getting one sprayed), quid to get it sprayed, thats 800 quid. I would rather get an 80quid helmet. They do look good though.

That helmet was middle of the road Sparco (bit under 300 quid) and the paint job a bit over 300 (a few years back).

80 quid - you have to be joking. You only have one head and all the important bits are INSIDE IT!;)

(assuming you mean £800 not £80), you could buy your helmet - ready painted - from JLF (or any of the other hat painters who are agents) thus getting a top quality hat, ready and jolly for your bonce.

IIRC, you can buy it and get it painted in one hit from GPR.

The one-stop-shop deal may save your money compared buying one, then getting the John Bull Printing set out afterwards.

I thought the life on a hat was 10 years?

this is the biggest misquote in motorsport, motorcycling news did a crash demonstration test recently on cheap helmets against really expensive ones and guess what, the cheap ones were rated better in terms of crash protection.
surely its more important for a bike magazine to test these things given their readers are more likely to come into contact with the tarmac in comparison to a racing driver?

Expensive helmets are designed for people with more money than sense and want to fit in with fashion.

i can not recall reading of a recent accident which has resulted in a death of a driver where the quality of the helmet was considered to be the reason of death.

:angry: I've just been through that with bike helmets..the cheap ones were 40 quid !!! I thought yikes they cant be any good and splashed out a good few hundred notes on an Arai Helmet... guess which one gets 2 stars in the sharp test and which one gets 3 !!!!! clue the arai'd not the best...

Although there isnt much info on how they came up with the scores or what the tests where...

My Shoei helmet thats fine for bike racing isnt for motor racing. The shoei helmet fits better than my Bell which was 200 quid or so more expensive. The difference is fire proofing around the visor seal and the retardant material used.

Having to have a HANS compatable helmet it slightly limits the choice too... though would love to get mine painted, anyone know any good and cheap places to get it done and how long it takes?

According to the safety standards, a Motorcycle Helmet is more geared for abrasion resistance, where the car racing helmet is more geared for impact resistance, and more lately puncture resistance - as well as the fireproof innards that bike hat's don't need/have.

That, according to the likes of BSI, and the EU, that bike helmets are now a different standard to car racing helmets.
