How do you move yours?
Discussion
Ok this one’s purely out of interest rather than a “I’m looking at things to buy”
How do you move your race car?
Simple trailer?
Motorhome and trailer
Racing enclosed box trailer
Horse box
Dirt box
Love to see some setups. Come show your amazing money pits
For me, I’ve got a vw caravelle, I’m intending to get a normal car trailer with a tyre/wheel rack. That’s about my limit for the foreseeable
Be keen to see some proper race setups

Used to pull a trailer but hated it..gotta start somewhere though.
Got this iveco 6.5t 65C18 van come truck ... It's a 3.0 4 cylinder turbo diesel 177hp and 6 speed auto box. It goes surprisingly well, comfortable, easy to drive and goes down the side of the house. It's an ex snap on van.. Full leccy, erberspacher, TV, leisure batteries, shelving and tool boxes, tail lift etc etc. Everything goes in and when the car is unloaded I sleep on an air bed in the back. It's the best thing I've ever bought!!

We started with a Toyota Landcruiser and a rigid covered trailer.
It ended up with a 7.5t race truck which could take two cars, or more often one car and all "the stuff". It had an awning which could take 2 cars easily, 3 at a squeeze and 4 if all rammed in with no room for doing things. A second van, one with a twin axle rear and a high load capacity towed a covered trailer with an internal ramp, which would take two F3 cars - one in backwards, and one without its nosebox in forwards undernearth.

I started off with a car and open trailer.
Went to a 7.5t Iveco which worked well as additional storage space / accommodation whilst at circuit for a few years but just found anything going wrong with it a pain as I didn't really have the time or expertise to fix much. I was also paying to store it and moved somewhere were I could keep a trailer.
Currently gone back to a car and open trailer with the intension of upgrading to a 4x4 and enclosed trailer soon although I do like the idea of a van based enclosed transporter like the one above which I might just about get away with keeping at home.

I have a Nissan Xtrail and Brian James Minno trailer. All kept at my house in the garage. Ease of loading is paramount for me, I don't want to get things from different locations.
I've had in the past various company cars fitted with tow bars, Mostly E61 BMW's and Audi A4's and for a short period had a Mazda Bongo, which was also a camper. That was useful at the race track, but 20 mpg and a bit slow otherwise.
Currently the Nissan ( T32) does a great job, it's been chipped to 150hp and pulls adequately, returning 40 mpg whilst towing. It's very comfy. 86k miles from new.
My normal plan of action is any circuit that's within 2 hours I drive to on the day of the race, over that, and I'll book an Air BNB the night before.
Towing/packing/unpacking is a bit of a bind though.

That's the same basic vehicle but you'll find the immediate problem is that the back end needs opening out for two full size doors, luckily mine had already been converted to take a car.
The other thing is mine is full kitted out inside, I thought all the snap on ones were... That is completely bare inside!

I was too young to have my tow licence when I started, but I did have my category C…
£6750 bought me this:
Which has a 2t tail lift, winch, workshop, full length tyre racks (enough for 6 full sets), accommodation with a kitchenette-ish arrangement, sleeper cab, belly lockers, hookup, generator, heater, sockets everywhere etc., and came with a huge awning two garage width and the length of the box.
The disadvantages being storage, ~10mpg, 56mph, and that I’ve never put the awning up as it’ll take a small army. Oh and I everyone else in the paddock will ask if you have x or y when they see the rig you’ve turned up in. People are a bit confused that it’s just me on my lonesome and that quite often I actually need a bit of help with things!
It’s the bks and I wouldn’t be without, I could legally have a trailer now but I don’t think I’d consider it for a second!

What is the cost for tax, MOT testing, and insurance for something like that?£6750 bought me this:

I'm sure I'd royally irritate my neighbours, but would be an ideal solution.
Standard open trailer towed by the big family car for the last 20 years. I like to be efficient with my transport options (aka just really tight!) so trailer has always been sized matched to racecar (Fiestas/Pumas) over the years to fit in the garage with the car on top to maximise storage space/costs. Tow cars have doubled up as the big fun barge - so Audi S8, BMW 530i, BMW X5 4.8is, Volvo V70 t5, BMW 550i, VW Transporter Shuttle (experimental camper), BMW X5 30i temporary towbarge at the moment. Would quite like a small motorhome at some point in the future but dont have the space and struggling to justify the outlay for something that will only get used a few times a year.

my 7.5t iveco was really cheap for most stuff from memory a few years ago I'm sure I'd royally irritate my neighbours, but would be an ideal solution.
Tax about £260
MOT usually £4-500 by the time a few things were done.
Limited millage insurance £250-280
Breakdown cover £180

Tax is £110 private registered, insurance is £300 which is not really any different to what I pay for a car, MOT can be a few hundred quid when things need doing but generally I’ve had pretty decent luck. Mice have been my bugbear and chewed up wiring has caused me grief, that’s just the nature of it sitting in storage for long periods unfortunately. My insurance doesn’t cover full recovery and that is a PITA, it’s expensive but not actually orders of magnitude more than a car. From memory that’s been around £300 when I’ve needed it.I'm sure I'd royally irritate my neighbours, but would be an ideal solution.
All in its cost me about £800 a year on average for running costs, repairs and recovery, I’m lucky enough to have a friend who helps with storage and I imagine that would add a chunk. It’s great having everything catered for in one vehicle, a comfy place to sleep, cold beer, hot food, the workshop has saved my arse on a few occasions where I’ve been able to macgyver some bodge or other together. It’s reasonably comfortable and easy to drive, within the context of being absolutely massive obviously! But long journeys do become loooooooong journeys
The geeky bits are- it’s an 18 tonner, 7 litre straight six with a mighty 225hp! It does actually make a very pleasing noise and isn’t too gutless, it’s certainly a nicer engine than the modern MAN equivalent V6 which we have in our works 18 tonners and supposedly makes more power but feels very flat in comparison, that maybe all the emissions gubbins on the modern engine.

lol damn. This is my tow car + everyday car 05 Forester XT (petrol 2.5 turbo)
Tax per year is 1220 or 1020 euro if I pay in one go, insurance is 1450 euro. So 2670 euro per year
Plus I pay 200 euro per month just to have a place to store my race car...the joys of motor racing right?

I'm supported so I only need to move the car and minimal kit.
First season this year with a C250 Estate and a BJ Micromax as thats what I already had.
Just upgraded the tow car to an ML350 and pick up a BJ dual axle covered trailer on Monday, ready to rock for next season
19mpg is already tiresome! Can’t even tell the trailer is on the back otherwise. First season this year with a C250 Estate and a BJ Micromax as thats what I already had.
