Caterham race car - where are they?
Discussion
Contemplating ditching all my race projects and induging in my original desire to play with a proper race car based on the Caterham 7 in the next couple of years. I've kinda settled on the 310R as the sensible sweet spot for me and still has an engine i'm very familar with. However do they exist, as dammed if I can find any for sale in the usual locations, is there some black market or special handshakes to get hold of these beasts?
Yeah, all three series have huge participation in their respective 310r classes this year. I'm not aware of a single 310r for sale at the moment - and be careful what you buy as there are a few dogs around that you'll find yourself spending money on getting gearbox/diff rebuilds, fitting new fire extinguisher and belts etc.
So far as I'm aware - PT have a 270 for sale right now, and that's the only current spec Sigma car on the market (and has probably sold by now). If you want a 310r you can upgrade a 270 to this spec - will cost you around £3-3.5k depending on what work you can do yourself (you need cam's, ecu flash and the LSD fitted as a minimum, which can be done engine in. But most get the lightweight flywheel done also which is obviously an engine out job)
Worth looking at where still has space too - I think Toyo and Caterham official are both full for 310r. Grads likely still have space though.

Thanks for the feedback folks. Glad i'm not in a hurry! I'm leaning towards CSCC Mag7's as there looks to be some wiggle room for tinkering and I enjoyed my CSCC TinTops experience last year. A ready to race car is not essential and I may be interested in upgrading a lower spec car or a fixer upper. Kinda tempted to try and recycle my current Fiesta Sigma race engine into this...
Mag 7's you'll be able to do that, but to that extent you may as well pick up a random 7 chassis an put an engine in.
You're never going to be competitive in mag's with a sigma though - there's some crazy trick stuff running in there, and you'll be being lapped by cars that are going over 10seconds a lap quicker than you.
The other series all need sealed engines and heavily restricted regs, so reduced your ability to tinker as you are aware. I do totally get that tinkering is fun though!
Just points for consideration really

You can certainly be competitive in your class in Mag7s, and there re always plenty of people to race against in whatever class. You're never going to be competitive in mag's with a sigma though - there's some crazy trick stuff running in there, and you'll be being lapped by cars that are going over 10seconds a lap quicker than you.

McMillan motorsport will be your best bet https://mcmm.co.uk/
If they don’t have a car in stock, they’ll probably know a driver looking to sell
