Looking to buy an entry level lap timer for lap analysis and with in car lap time display + leds for sector times . Found this on Demon Tweeks but would appreciate your advice if this fits the bill or suitable alternatives.

Just had a quick look, and it looks similar to the aim mychron 5 on my sons go kart. Once you get your head around the analysis software, which takes a few views on the YouTube tutorials, it is very good.

I've been using a Solo, which is the earlier version, they work nicely.

Get the DL one if you can.

I've been using AIM for years and it is brilliant. The YouTube videos are great and James Colborn does some great short video tutorials.

Yeah, the Solo is hard to beat for entry level stuff. The only other option worth considering is the VBox Sport. Downside is you need to use a phone as the lap timer display. Upsides are the display is much better than the Solo and the analysis software is much more intuitive than the AIM stuff.

Thanks Dan yeah was looking at the VBox sport too.
Issue is mounting the phone in the car. I’m guessing you can’t have the vbox sport suckered to the windscreen in race conditions either If anyone has a recommendation I’m all ears.
Scrutineering seem to have a paddy if competitors have phones in the car, which everyone does for comms!
TBH I’ll probably only be glancing at LEDs for sectors rather than a nice display

I’d second the aim solo 2 DL.
Gets great data from the car CAN system plus you can add a camera at a later date as funds allow.

We have 5 of them and they are brilliant

I have a few customers who run the VBox sport and none of them have ever had a scrutineer complain about a phone in the car. You can run it without a sim so if they complain you can say it’s just a screen.

You can just mount the VBox on the dash using some 3M Dual Lock. Solid but easily removable.

Phones/tablets are mentioned in regs now so a no-go for motorsport sadly.

This is not actually the case. The regs are only there to avoid communication. If the device is only a display and not a communication device then there is no issue.

Also, people still use Stilo Verbacom systems instead of radios and I have never seen anyone pulled by a scrut for one of them.

Why would it be the only option when there are others ?

VBox Touch ?

I didn’t say only option. I said only option worth considering.

The OP said they were looking for an entry level system.

Really not much price difference between the VBox and the Solo he listed.

Just started using a Garmin catalyst…. Absolutely sensational, great camera but critically so easy to use to overlay laps and analysis. Night and day compared to vbox and Aim in terms of ease of use, especially at the track.

Not so. 2021 regs were amended to ban them completely.
I queried this with MSUK for that exact reason and possible distraction from other functions a phone/tablet has.

Yeah - it will have been part of a risk assesment. I imagine if someone has a breakdown it could cause them to remain in the car to get the phone for longer than is nessesary, etc etc.

Phones have no place in a race car.

Personally OP, I'd stick to VBOX. Whilst it's not always the most reliable, it is generally the most universally used data and therefor you can get laps off other people to compare yourself to etc etc.

Check out www.racing-telemetry.com where you can actually buy lap data from other racers in Caterhams.

Ive seen someone changing music durig the Ka endurance races.. so anythings possible. Ok its hardly intensive racing but line has tonbe drawn somewhere. I think with complusary incar cameras they should be allowed, and drivers penalised if they use them for anything other than lap timing.
