Hi, I need to buy a transponder and I know the non-subscription ones have gone through the roof over the last few years. Are they still worth buying or with the high costs are subscriptions now a better approach- especially with a lot of the old type appearing old and well used?

I can't find the actual cost of a subscription only, the costs shown include a new transponder and I'd like to know the ongoing/long term costs.

Thanks

The cost between a 1 year sub and a 5 year sub is £ 198, so 4 years is £ 49.50 per year.

Subscription is about £ 80 per year, although can be dropped by buying a longer subscription up front.

I've just noticed they still offer a subscription free version, €579 (£480ish) which isn't much more than the old red ones are going for.

I suspected it wouldn't be as simple as the difference between a 1 year and 5 year /4, its virtually the same price to buy a new one every few years as to renew the subscription.

I assume they all do the same job (I noticed one has bluetooth), will call them to find out.

Was a no brainer for me. Non subscription versions hold their value, so regardless of comparing costs over time, if you buy a used non subs and sell it when your done for the same price its a 0 cost. Only risk is if you break it. But position it sensibly and it should be safe. Im glad i located mine differently to previous owner of car as I would have almost certainly lost it when car was damaged this year. (was in inner arch (quite common), I moved it to inner chassis leg).
